You cannot buy PAPER. There is no spot market, the PaperTrade team has said it has no plans to allow one, and the two perp markets that briefly gave traders price exposure both shut down on October 20. The only way to hold PAPER today is to earn it by closing a losing trade on PaperTrade.
This guide covers what happened to the perps, why the team locked the token on purpose, and how the mint route works step by step. For the basics of the exchange, start with what is PaperTrade.
What Happened to the PAPER Perps
For two days, PAPER had a price. Paragon deployed a 3x PAPER-USDC perp on Hyperliquid on October 18, and I covered that listing in PAPER on Hyperliquid. Aster followed with its own 3x pre-launch perp on October 19.
Then PaperTrade published its position on transfers. Within hours, Aster moved its market to reduce-only and set a delisting for the morning of October 20. Paragon halted the Hyperliquid market and settled open positions at $0.026296. Both venues said they would revisit only if PaperTrade changes course.
So the perp route is gone. Any site telling you to trade PAPER on Hyperliquid or Aster is working from a two day old playbook.
Why PaperTrade Locked the Token
PAPER launched with zero supply and no sale. The contract mints it to traders who lose, and holders can stake or unstake. Nothing else. Most people read that as a launch phase. The team has now said it is the design.
The reasoning sits in how PaperTrade pays winners. Every win comes from a single pool, the bankroll. A perp on PAPER is a leveraged bet on whether that bankroll survives. Anyone able to short PAPER gets paid twice for breaking the house: once by draining the pool, once on the short. The team can cap the bankroll to keep attacks unprofitable, but it cannot cap an outside market. Therefore, the more PAPER trades off contract, the smaller PaperTrade has to stay.
Their conclusion was blunt. Transferability right now only helps the people waiting to short it. No spot, no timeline, and the perp venues got the message.
The Only Route: Mint PAPER by Losing
This is how every PAPER in existence was created, and it still works. The tokens stake for USDC, and that USDC is real.
Step 1. Deposit at least 10 USDC into PaperTrade plus the 1 USDC activation fee. The route runs from Ethereum through Circle to HyperCore.
Step 2. Open a BTC or ETH position you expect to lose. At 1000x, a 0.1% move against you ends it, so this does not take long.
Step 3. Let the position close at a loss or get liquidated. The contract mints PAPER to your wallet automatically.
Step 4. Open the Paper tab and stake. Staked PAPER collects a share of winning closes plus every dollar of losses above the pool cap.
Step 5. Decide how much loss you are buying. With no perp to short against, there is no hedge. Each dollar you lose is a dollar spent on future USDC flow, and nothing more.
One more thing on timing. The mint curve is changing. Instead of a flat 100 PAPER per $1 lost, each $1 lost will mint a fixed share of supply, around 0.1% per $1 million in losses. Older holders get diluted over time. The change goes through a timelock first, so check which curve is live before you farm.
Should You Bother
Honestly, PAPER is now a pure yield position. You pay a loss, you receive a stream of USDC, and you cannot sell the thing that produces it. The stream has paid out tens of millions in ten days, and the contracts are public. That part is real.
The other part is that the stream depends on fresh losers. If traders get careful and farmers go quiet, staking income falls and your loss stays a loss. Size it like a bet on PaperTrade’s survival, because that is exactly what it is.

PAPER cannot be bought anywhere, so nobody pays us for this guide. PaperTrade takes its reference prices from Hyperliquid, and our Hyperliquid link is the one way this cluster supports the site. For centralized trading, OKX and Bybit remain our picks.
Final Words
Buying PAPER for the first time means losing a trade on PaperTrade. That is the whole guide. The spot market does not exist, the team does not plan one, and the perps that briefly priced the token are closed.
The lock is a feature. It keeps the house pool safe from people who would rather short the bankroll than trade against it. If you want in, mint it, stake it, and know what you are holding.
FAQ
Can you buy PAPER on a spot exchange?
No. Transfers are locked and the PaperTrade team has said it has no plans to enable them. No spot market exists anywhere.
Can you trade a PAPER perp?
Not anymore. Paragon halted its Hyperliquid market and settled positions at $0.026296 on October 19, and Aster delisted its pre-launch perp on October 20. Both followed PaperTrade’s transfer statement.
Why won’t PaperTrade allow PAPER transfers?
A tradable PAPER lets attackers short the house bankroll while attacking it. The team would rather keep the pool growing than shrink it to make a perp safe.
How do you get PAPER tokens?
Close a losing trade or get liquidated on PaperTrade. The contract mints PAPER automatically. Tokens can be staked for USDC but not transferred.
Is PAPER on Bybit or OKX?
No. No centralized exchange lists PAPER, because the token cannot move and the team does not plan to change that.
Is the PAPER mint rate changing?
Yes. The team announced a switch from 100 PAPER per $1 lost to a fixed share of supply per dollar lost, roughly 0.1% per $1 million. It goes live after a timelock.
