Why SOL Dropped and My $103.8 Long

By WebDeskOctober 22, 20268 Mins Read

Solana flipped on Alpenglow yesterday. Finality dropped from 12.8 seconds to 150 milliseconds. Then SOL fell 4% overnight anyway, to about $104.

The upgrade didn’t fail. Wall Street did. Tesla and Meta reported after the close, Nasdaq futures sank, and crypto followed. Below, I cover what shipped, why the price ignored it, the macro behind the dump, a bit of SOL TA, and my long from $103.8.

What Shipped With the Alpenglow Mainnet Activation

Anza activated Alpenglow on Solana mainnet-beta on Wednesday, October 21, around 14:00 UTC at slot 459,653,000. TowerBFT, the consensus system that ran Solana since March 2020, is retired. Validators made the switch on a live network, with no halt and no restart.

Finality is the headline. A transaction used to become irreversible after roughly 12.8 seconds. Now it takes about 150 milliseconds. Brennan Watt of Anza called it the biggest blockchain upgrade since the Ethereum Merge.

Only part of the package went live, however. Votor, the new voting module, is active. Rotor, which changes how block data spreads between validators, comes later with no date. Quantumglow, a quantum-resistant signature design, is still research.

One side effect will confuse people. Validator votes no longer sit inside blocks as transactions. As a result, explorers will show fewer transactions per second, even though real user activity hasn’t changed. If someone tweets that Solana activity collapsed this week, that’s why.

For the full breakdown of Votor, Rotor and the 20+20 resilience model, read my Solana Alpenglow explainer from August. Back then it was a plan. Today it’s running.

Why Is SOL Down the Day After Alpenglow?

SOL is down because the upgrade was already priced in and the macro turned risk-off overnight. The activation date was public since October 17. Traders bought the rumor for a week, SOL gained about 2% into the switch on Wednesday afternoon, and then the sellers showed up with the Nasdaq.

That’s the classic sell-the-news pattern. A known event with a known date rarely pumps on the day itself. The buyers who wanted in were already in.

Macro did the rest. SOL trades as a high-beta version of BTC, and BTC trades as a high-beta version of the Nasdaq right now. When Nasdaq futures fell more than 1% after the close, SOL had no chance to hold its gain.

So, the upgrade went fine. The timing was bad.

The Macro That Dumped Everything Overnight

Tesla and Meta reported after Wednesday’s close. Both beat on earnings per share. The market sold them anyway, for opposite reasons.

Tesla cut its 2026 capex guidance to about $20 billion, down from more than $25 billion. Q3 capex came in at $4.73 billion against $7.96 billion expected. Investors read that as Tesla pulling back from the AI race, and the stock dropped 3% to 5% after hours. Meta did the opposite. It raised AI spending while posting negative free cash flow and a $9.89 billion legal charge. Shares fell about 6% at the open.

Lam Research added fuel with weak guidance and a 7% drop. Nasdaq 100 futures lost between 1.1% and 1.8%. Consequently, Asia opened red. The Kospi fell 3.52% to 5,533, the Nikkei lost 2.6%, and China’s CSI 300 dropped 1.7%.

Oil made it worse. A drone strike on Saudi Aramco’s Shaybah field pushed Brent toward $111. Higher oil keeps inflation sticky, so rate hike odds stay high. FedWatch now prices a 15% chance of a hike at the October 27-28 meeting and roughly 90% for December. The 10-year yield sits above 5%.

Gold and silver got hit by the same rate story. Gold fell 1.3% to about $4,085, its lowest since October 14. Silver dropped 3% to around $56. Neither acted as a safe haven, because higher-for-longer rates raise the cost of holding metal that pays nothing. If you trade metals on crypto exchanges, my TradFi guide explains how those perps work.

Crypto leverage amplified the move. Bitcoin open interest hit $55.95 billion late Tuesday, the highest since September 25. Around $359 million in positions got liquidated in 24 hours, with BTC at $110 million and ETH at $95 million. BTC itself topped near $84,840 Wednesday evening and lost $3,000 in six hours. I covered the setup going into earnings in my Bitcoin 83K post.

SOL Technical Analysis: The Levels I’m Watching

Here is the short version of the chart.

  • $105: resistance before the launch, and the ceiling again today
  • $103 to $104: where price sits now, and where I entered
  • $100: the level buyers defended all month
  • $107: my TP2, and the first hurdle above
  • $110: the level that opens the door to $114 to $115
  • $114: the point where the bearish structure flips, in my view
  • $120: the sell wall from early October, near the monthly high

The daily chart still prints lower highs since the $122 top on the jobs report. Nonetheless, every dip toward $100 found buyers this month, and the 4H candles held above it. That gives me a range, not a trend. In a range, I buy the bottom third and sell the top third, with a tight stop.

Lose $100 on a daily close and the picture changes. In that case, the next real demand sits in the low $90s, and I stand aside.

My SOL Long at $103.8

I went long SOL at $103.8 during the overnight flush. TP1 hit within 30 minutes, so I trailed my stop to breakeven. TP2 sits at $107.

That’s how I manage risk. First target hits, stop moves to entry, and the trade can no longer hurt me. In the end, you collect a lot of small green trades. More importantly, you avoid the big red days that wipe out a month of work.

If the stop gets tagged, fine. I re-evaluate and decide whether a re-entry makes sense. A stop-out is information, not a failure. The full method for buying pullbacks in a range or an uptrend is in my buy the dip strategy guide.

BTC, ETH and HYPE: Where My Other Trades Stand

My BTC long from the range low did its job. Price ran well, and the trade hit two take profits. Then it round-tripped a lot of the open profit on the overnight drop. That’s fine. The position is still green, and part of the profit was locked at the targets.

I added again at $81,500 on the dip. My stop moved, and TP1 on the new position sits at $85,000. I treat this as a fresh trade with its own stop and targets, because that’s how my trailing works. Old targets don’t carry over.

I also longed ETH and HYPE on the same flush. Both have stops in place. The thesis is simple: the drop was a Nasdaq reaction to two earnings reports, not a crypto problem, and the Fed meets next week with a hold priced in.

Final Words

Alpenglow mainnet is live, and 150 millisecond finality is real. Yet SOL fell the next day, because Tesla, Meta and the Kospi set the tone overnight. The upgrade was priced in, and the macro was not.

I’m long SOL from $103.8 with a breakeven stop and $107 as the next target. BTC got a fresh entry at $81,500, and ETH and HYPE joined the list. Every position has a stop. That’s the only reason I can hold through a night like this one.

Next week brings the Fed on October 27-28. Until then, $100 on SOL and $80,000 on BTC are the lines that matter.

FAQ

Is Solana Alpenglow live on mainnet?

Yes. Anza activated Alpenglow on mainnet-beta on October 21, 2026, at slot 459,653,000. Votor is live, while Rotor and Quantumglow come later.

Why did SOL drop after the Alpenglow upgrade?

The activation date was public, so the news was priced in. Then Tesla and Meta earnings sent Nasdaq futures down more than 1%, and crypto followed the risk-off move.

What is Solana’s finality after Alpenglow?

Around 150 milliseconds, down from roughly 12.8 seconds under TowerBFT. It will take a few days to confirm that number under real global conditions.

Why do Solana explorers show fewer transactions now?

Validator votes moved off-chain, so they no longer count as transactions. Real user activity has not changed.

What are the key SOL price levels right now?

$100 is the support buyers defended all month. $105 is the immediate resistance, $107 the next target, and $114 is where the bearish structure flips.
