Most perp DEXs compete on fees. Lighter and Variational simply removed them. Both let retail traders open and close positions without paying a maker or taker fee. That’s where the resemblance ends. Lighter runs a ZK-proven order book on Ethereum, while Variational quotes you prices through an RFQ system on Arbitrum.
This Lighter vs Variational comparison digs into how each zero-fee model really works. We also compare liquidity, markets, access, backers and the two tokens: a live LIT and a still-pending VAR.
Our Verdict in Brief
Lighter is the better zero-fee perp DEX for most traders, with a transparent order book, verifiable execution, open access and a live token. Variational wins on market variety and perks, offering 450+ perps, partial loss refunds and upside from its unlaunched VAR token. Make Lighter your default, and keep Variational for exotic pairs.

Two Ways to Charge Nothing
Lighter’s Standard accounts pay 0% on every perp and spot trade. The protocol makes money elsewhere: liquidity pool earnings, liquidation fees and yield on USDC deposits. High-frequency firms can switch to Premium accounts, which carry small fees in exchange for lower latency.
Variational’s Omni also skips trading fees, but it earns through the spread. A liquidity provider quotes you a price slightly away from the market, and that difference funds the platform. On major pairs, the gap stays small. On thin, long-tail coins, it can get noticeably wider.
The practical difference comes down to visibility. On Lighter, you see the full bid and ask before you trade. On Omni, you see a single quote and decide whether to take it.
Edge: Lighter for cost transparency.
Loss Refunds vs Liquidity Yield
Each platform adds a perk on top of zero fees. Omni refunds a small percentage of the loss on some losing trades, instantly. It’s a quirky feature, and it softens bad days a little.
Lighter’s perk targets a different user. Its Lighter Liquidity Pool (LLP) pays yield from market making and liquidations. To deposit, you stake LIT at a 1:10 ratio, so 1 LIT unlocks up to 10 USDC of pool exposure.
Active traders will probably value Omni’s refunds more. Passive users looking for yield will prefer Lighter’s LLP.
Edge: depends on how you use the platform.
Liquidity and Trust
Lighter processed about $46 billion in perp volume over 30 days in mid-September 2026. Its TVL sits above $1 billion. Custom ZK circuits prove every match and liquidation, and an escape hatch lets users withdraw straight to Ethereum if the sequencer fails.
Variational has passed $225 billion in cumulative volume since launch. That’s impressive for a platform still in private beta, but Lighter now clears a similar amount within a few months. On Omni, execution quality depends on the quotes from its liquidity providers. You can’t independently verify depth the way you can on a public book.
Edge: Lighter.
Market Selection
Variational’s quote model makes adding markets easy. Omni lists 450+ perps, including many small-cap tokens and pre-IPO markets. In September 2026, it also launched spot swaps.
Lighter focuses on fewer, deeper markets. You get the major crypto perps, a growing spot lineup and leverage up to around 50x. If you trade BTC, ETH, SOL and other large caps, Lighter covers you. Chasing an obscure altcoin? Omni probably lists it first.
Edge: Variational.
Access and Backing
Anyone in an eligible region can connect a wallet to Lighter and start trading. Omni still runs as an invite-only app, so you need a referral or access code. It also blocks US and Canadian users.
Both teams have heavyweight backers. Variational raised roughly $62 million, including a $50 million Series A led by Dragonfly in May 2026. Lighter closed a $68 million round in late 2025 with Founders Fund and Ribbit Capital. Neither platform lacks resources.
Edge: Lighter on access. Backing is a draw.
LIT vs VAR: Tokens and Airdrops
Lighter already delivered. Its LIT airdrop landed at the end of 2025 and ranked among the year’s biggest. Protocol revenue now funds LIT buybacks, and a large reserve remains set aside for future rewards. Our Lighter project page tracks each new campaign.
Variational hasn’t launched VAR yet. It confirmed 50% of supply for the community and committed at least 30% of protocol revenue to buybacks and burns. Its Omni Points program was scheduled to wrap up by September 30, 2026, which puts the spotlight on the upcoming TGE. Follow the latest on our Variational airdrop listing.
With zero fees on both sides, hedging across these two venues costs less than on most platforms. Our delta-neutral farming walkthrough shows how to set up opposing positions without taking market risk. Just remember that funding rates and spreads still apply.
Edge: Lighter for a proven token, Variational for pre-launch upside.
