How to Buy Shiba Inu (SHIB) for the First Time: 2026 Guide

To buy Shiba Inu, open an account on a crypto exchange, finish the identity check, deposit money, and buy SHIB on the SHIB/USDT spot market. SHIB is listed on nearly every exchange, so a first purchase takes only minutes. The coin runs on Ethereum and costs a tiny fraction of a cent. In this guide, I show every way to buy it. I also tell the story of how its founder contacted us before launch, and why I said no.

Shiba Inu in Short

Shiba Inu is a meme coin that launched on Ethereum in August 2020. An anonymous founder known as Ryoshi created it as a rival to Dogecoin. The starting supply was one quadrillion tokens. Half of that went to Ethereum co-founder Vitalik Buterin, who later burned most of it. Today, roughly 589 trillion SHIB remain in circulation.

In 2021, the coin exploded. Early buyers saw gains of several hundred thousand percent within a year. At the peak that October, SHIB was worth over $40 billion. Since then, the project has added its own exchange, ShibaSwap, and a layer 2 network called Shibarium. Even so, SHIB remains a meme coin at heart. It still ranks first in our overview of the best Ethereum meme coins.

The SHIB Founder Reached Out to Us Before Launch

This might be the biggest fumble of my life. Before SHIB launched, its founder contacted AirdropAlert. He was looking for promotion and support. Back then, we already had a large community of crypto-curious people. Meme coins, however, were nowhere near as big as they are today. So his team wanted our help to grow it.

I have known meme coins since 2014. In fact, I even mined Dogecoin, as I describe in my Dogecoin mining story. Let me tell you, most meme coins rug. Therefore, I was not going to attach the AirdropAlert name to one without more information.

First, I asked the founder to join a video call. I wanted to at least look him in the eye. He refused. Next, I asked him to complete KYC through Civic, a decentralized identity service. AirdropAlert had a partnership with Civic at that time. With that setup, I would never see his documents myself. Instead, I would trust Civic to confirm a real person stood behind the project. He refused that as well. At that point, I could not support the coin, even if I had wanted to.

The Real Cost of Due Diligence

Here is the painful part. Suppose the founder had paid us a token fee of $200 in SHIB before launch. At those early valuations, that payment would probably have grown to seven figures. That is the real cost of due diligence, right there.

Would I make the same call again? Honestly, yes. An anonymous founder who refuses every form of verification is a red flag, and most such coins end badly. SHIB was the rare exception. So I still run checks before I touch any meme, and my memecoin due diligence guide lists them. For the bigger picture, see what makes a good meme coin. Buying SHIB’s older rival instead? Then our guide on how to buy Dogecoin has you covered.

Where to Buy SHIB: Start With an Exchange

New buyers should use an exchange, because it accepts regular money. For SHIB, OKX is my number one choice. Its fees are low, and the SHIB market is very active. Bybit takes second place and remains my most-used exchange. Check the reviews for a closer look. Alternatively, register directly with the OKX referral or the Bybit referral. Either one unlocks a sign-up reward.

Set up the account

Enter your email, choose a password, and confirm your address. Then complete the ID verification. Approval rarely takes long. Meanwhile, turn on two-factor authentication for extra security.

Fund it

After approval, deposit money. Most people use a bank transfer, since it costs the least. A debit or credit card works faster, though the fee is higher.

Place your first order

Type SHIB into the spot market search and select SHIB/USDT. A market order buys at once. By contrast, a limit order lets you name your price. Because SHIB has so many decimals, check the price carefully before you confirm.

Further exchanges

SHIB is available well beyond those two. Blofin lists it and keeps the interface clean. Kraken works for anyone who wants a veteran, regulated exchange. Binance has it as well, but I recommend the others first.

The FOMO App Route

Some buyers plan to trade more memes after SHIB. For them, the FOMO app is worth considering. You keep a single USDC balance and buy coins across chains without bridging. Gas is handled inside the app, which helps on Ethereum, where fees can be high.

FOMO is my main tool for meme trading. My FOMO app review covers the pros and cons, and this link opens a FOMO account. Still deciding between apps? Then read our roundup of the best places to trade meme coins.

The On-Chain Route

You can also buy SHIB from a self-custody wallet. To do that, install MetaMask and add some ETH for the swap and the gas. Afterward, pull up SHIB on Dexscreener or GMGN and make the trade. This path gives you full control. However, Ethereum gas can make small purchases expensive, so it suits larger orders better.

Fakes, Networks, and Storage

SHIB inspired an army of imitators. Tokens with names like Baby Shiba or Shiba 2.0 have nothing to do with the original. So confirm the ticker on exchanges, and confirm the contract on-chain. The official SHIB contract on Ethereum is 0x95aD61b0a150d79219dCF64E1E6Cc01f0B64C4cE.

Networks cause trouble too. When you withdraw, the exchange may show Ethereum next to other options. Unless your wallet supports another network, choose Ethereum. As for storage, small balances can sit on the exchange. Bigger ones are safer in your own wallet, as our self-custody guide explains.

SHIB Perps for Active Traders

Once you know spot, you might explore perpetual futures. These contracts let you trade SHIB in both directions with leverage. OKX and Bybit each run SHIB perps, usually quoted per thousand coins. So you can stay on the exchange you already use. On-chain traders often pick Hyperliquid instead, where the market is called kSHIB. Join via our Hyperliquid referral link to save on fees. Remember, though, that leverage raises risk sharply. Beginners should therefore keep positions small.

Buying SHIB in Your Region

SHIB is one of the most widely listed coins on earth. Still, local rules shape your best option.

United States

Every major US platform carries SHIB. Find the right one in our US exchange rankings.

Europe

European buyers get SHIB on all the big MiCA-compliant exchanges. See our Europe exchange comparison for the shortlist.

Latin America

In this region, peer-to-peer and local bank deposits matter a great deal. Our LATAM exchange guide explains which platforms handle them well.

East Asia

SHIB has a loyal following across East Asia. Because licensing varies, check the East Asia exchange list first.

India

India is one of the largest SHIB markets anywhere. Before you buy, review the top exchanges for India and their tax handling.

Somewhere else entirely? Our library of exchange reviews includes more than 40 platforms, comparisons, and regional guides.

Keep This Content Free

Turning down SHIB cost me a fortune, so I appreciate every referral. If you register through the links in this guide, you earn a bonus and we earn a commission. In return, AirdropAlert stays free for everyone.

Final Words

Shiba Inu is simple to buy and impossible to predict. Use a reputable exchange, watch the decimals, and double-check the network when you withdraw. Then keep my story in mind. Due diligence cost me a seven-figure payday once, yet it has saved me from countless rugs since. I would still choose the checks.

Going through every guide? The one before this covers how to buy TRUMP coin.

FAQ

Which exchanges list Shiba Inu?

SHIB trades on OKX, Bybit, Blofin, Kraken, and Binance. It is also listed on MEXC, Bitget, Bitunix, and Coinbase.

Who created Shiba Inu?

An anonymous person or group using the name Ryoshi. Ryoshi stepped away from the project in 2022, and the identity remains unknown.

How many SHIB tokens exist?

About 589 trillion are in circulation. The original supply was one quadrillion, but a large share has been burned.

Can SHIB reach one cent?

That is extremely unlikely. At one cent, SHIB would be worth roughly $5.9 trillion, which exceeds the value of any crypto asset in history.

Is SHIB on Ethereum or Shibarium?

Both. The main token lives on Ethereum, while Shibarium is the project’s own layer 2 network. Exchanges normally use the Ethereum version.

Is Shiba Inu the same as Dogecoin?

No. Dogecoin has its own blockchain, whereas SHIB is a token on Ethereum. They only share the dog theme.
