This Robinhood review answers one question first. Is Robinhood good for crypto? Yes, for buying and holding major coins inside a regulated app. No, if you want low fees on active trading or a deep altcoin list.
That short answer hides a bigger story. Robinhood now runs its own blockchain, owns Bitstamp, and offers staking and self-custody. Below, I break down fees, coins, safety, and the part I care about most: Robinhood Chain.
What Is Robinhood?
Robinhood is a US broker founded in 2013 and listed on Nasdaq under HOOD. It made commission-free stock trading normal. Crypto arrived later and stayed basic for years.
That changed fast. In June 2025, the company bought Bitstamp, one of the oldest exchanges in crypto. A year later it launched its own Layer 2. We told the full company story in our what is Robinhood guide.
Today the app covers stocks, options, futures, prediction markets, and crypto. US users get the full menu. European users get crypto and Stock Tokens, and UK crypto is still rolling out.
Robinhood Crypto Fees
“Commission-free” is the headline. The real cost sits in the spread.
Simple Trades
A normal buy or sell carries no visible fee. Instead, Robinhood earns on the price difference. Its own disclosure puts that at roughly $0.95 per $100 traded.
So a $1,000 purchase costs you around $9.60. Buying and later selling doubles it to nearly 2%. That beats Coinbase’s simple screen, but it is far from free.
Advanced Trades
Active traders should use Robinhood Legend. Orders there route to real exchanges, including Bitstamp, with visible maker and taker fees.
| 30-day volume | Taker | Maker |
|---|---|---|
| Under $10K | 0.95% | 0.50% |
| $10K to $50K | 0.75% | 0.35% |
| $50K to $250K | 0.25% | 0.125% |
| $1M to $5M | 0.10% | 0.04% |
The entry tier is expensive. Fees only turn competitive above $50K in monthly volume.
Other Costs
Crypto withdrawals carry no platform fee, only the network fee. Standard bank withdrawals cost nothing too. Instant cash-outs cost up to 1.75%. Robinhood Gold runs $5 per month or $50 per year.
Supported Coins and Regions
The US app lists around 84 coins. Europe gets about 65. Both numbers have grown quickly since the Bitstamp deal.
Still, the list is curated. New memes and low caps rarely show up here. Anyone hunting early launches needs a second venue.
Availability is the other limit. Robinhood serves the US, the EEA, and the UK only. American readers can compare it against other licensed options in our best crypto exchanges in the USA list.
Staking, Yield and the Robinhood Wallet
Staking covers ETH, SOL, and ADA, starting from $1. Robinhood keeps 25% of the rewards. A handful of US states are excluded.
Stablecoin holders get a second option. Robinhood Earn pays a variable yield on USDG, lent through Morpho. Treat it as DeFi risk, not a savings account.
You can also send coins out. Transfers need an extra identity check first, which can take several business days. After that, withdrawals work like any exchange.
Robinhood Wallet is a separate self-custody app. You hold the keys, and it connects to Ethereum networks, Solana, and Bitcoin. Not sure which side you belong on? Read our take on self-custody versus keeping coins on an exchange.
Robinhood Chain: The Part That Matters Most
Here is where Robinhood stops being a broker. Robinhood Chain went live on mainnet on July 1, 2026. It is an Ethereum Layer 2 built on Arbitrum tech.
Anyone can deploy on it without permission. Our Robinhood Chain guide covers the architecture in detail.
The official pitch is tokenized stocks trading around the clock. One caveat applies: current Stock Tokens track prices as derivatives and are not direct equity. We mapped the reward angle in our tokenized stock airdrops breakdown.
Then the crowd showed up. Within days, the chain became a meme coin playground. I covered the biggest runners in our top Robinhood memes post. Launch platforms followed, and we ranked them in the Robinhood launchpads listicle.
The chain has no token yet. That keeps airdrop speculation alive, and we track it on the Robinhood Chain airdrop page.
My view is simple. The app is a solid on-ramp. The chain is the reason crypto natives should pay attention.
Is Robinhood Safe?
As a company, Robinhood is about as transparent as crypto gets. It files audited results with the SEC. Its crypto arm holds state licenses, including a New York BitLicense.
Most customer coins sit in cold storage. However, crypto on Robinhood has no SIPC or FDIC cover. Stocks in the same app do have SIPC protection, which confuses people.
The record is not spotless. In 2021, Robinhood halted buying of meme stocks during the GameStop squeeze. That same year, a data breach exposed names and emails of millions of users. FINRA also fined the firm $26 million in 2025.
None of those events cost customers their crypto. The trust damage from 2021 lingers anyway.

Final Words
Robinhood grew up. It went from a stock app with a crypto tab to a company running its own chain.
For beginners in the US or Europe, it is a safe and simple place to buy major coins. Active traders will pay more here than on a crypto-native exchange. Onchain users should skip the app and look straight at Robinhood Chain.
So my verdict is split. Use the app as an on-ramp, then move to cheaper venues or self-custody as you grow.
