What the Gap Tells You Before You Buy

Two tokens can show the exact same market cap and carry completely different risk. The difference hides in one number most traders never check: FDV.

Market cap is the value of the tokens trading today. FDV, or fully diluted valuation, is the value of every token that will ever exist. Market cap equals price times circulating supply. FDV equals price times maximum supply. The gap between the two shows how many new tokens are still coming to market.

A small gap means little future dilution. A big gap means unlocks are waiting, and every unlock is potential sell pressure.

How Each Number Is Calculated

Both formulas use the same price. Only the supply changes.

Market cap = current price × circulating supply

FDV = current price × maximum (or total) supply

Take a token trading at $1. It has 100 million tokens circulating and a maximum supply of 1 billion. Its market cap is $100 million. Its FDV is $1 billion.

That token looks like a $100 million project on most charts. In reality, the market is pricing it at a billion. The other 900 million tokens sit with the team, investors or a treasury, waiting to unlock.

The MC/FDV Ratio: One Number to Remember

Divide market cap by FDV and you get a ratio between 0 and 1. This is the fastest way to read a token’s supply risk.

A ratio of 1.0 means everything already circulates. There are no hidden unlocks and no future dilution from new supply.

A ratio of 0.5 means half the supply is still locked. Future holders will absorb a lot of new tokens.

A ratio under 0.2 is a red flag for most traders. Over 80% of the supply has not hit the market yet. Price has to fight a wall of unlocks just to stay flat.

Sites like CoinGecko show the ratio directly next to market cap and FDV. Our Dexscreener review covers where to find both numbers on a live chart.

Why Token Unlocks Matter So Much

Locked tokens do not stay locked forever. Most projects follow a vesting schedule. Team and investor tokens release monthly or in big chunks after a cliff.

Picture the holders on the other side. Early investors often bought at a fraction of today’s price. When their tokens unlock, many of them sell. Even a modest unlock can hit a token hard when buyers are thin.

This is why low-float, high-FDV launches often bleed for months. The chart can look like slow death even while the project ships real work. New supply simply outpaces new demand.

Always check the unlock calendar before you buy a low-ratio token. A big cliff next month changes the trade completely.

Market Cap vs FDV in Meme Coins

Meme coins flip the usual picture. Most launch through a bonding curve with the entire supply released on day one. Our guide to what a bonding curve is explains how that launch model works.

The result is a ratio of 1.0 on almost every launchpad meme. Scroll through Base or Solana meme rankings and you will see it again and again. Market cap and FDV match exactly.

That sounds safe, but it hides a different risk. A ratio of 1.0 tells you nothing about who holds the supply. A few wallets can still own a huge slice. Always check holder concentration next.

Celebrity and political coins are the big exception. They often launch with most of the supply locked for insiders.

TRUMP is the classic case. It launched in January 2025 with only 20% of its 1 billion tokens circulating. The other 80% belonged to Trump-linked entities on a multi-year unlock. We break down how that played out for buyers in our worst political memecoins list.

LAPTOP followed a similar playbook. Today its market cap sits around $24 million against an FDV near $68 million. That ratio of roughly 0.36 means most of the supply still has not hit the market. Read the launch story in our Hunter Biden laptop memecoin breakdown.

How to Use MC vs FDV Before You Buy

Run this quick check on any token before you enter.

1. Compare the two numbers. Divide market cap by FDV. Anything under 0.5 needs a closer look.

2. Find the unlock schedule. Look for cliffs, monthly releases and who receives the tokens.

3. Price the token at full dilution. Ask yourself one question. Would you still buy at the FDV?

4. Check the holders. A ratio of 1.0 can still hide a whale-heavy supply.

5. Compare with peers. A new token at a $2 billion FDV needs to beat projects already worth that much.

This check takes two minutes. It belongs in every buying routine, right next to the other steps in our memecoin due diligence checklist.

Common Mistakes With Market Cap and FDV

Calling a token “cheap” because of a low market cap. A $50 million cap with a $2 billion FDV is not cheap. The market already values it at $2 billion.

Ignoring FDV because unlocks feel far away. Markets price unlocks early. Sellers front-run them weeks ahead.

Treating a 1.0 ratio as risk-free. Full circulation removes unlock risk only. It says nothing about liquidity or insider wallets.

Mixing up total supply and max supply. Some tokens have no hard cap. Inflationary coins keep minting, so FDV keeps moving.

Final Words

Market cap tells you what a token is worth today. FDV tells you what the market expects once every token exists. The gap between them is future supply, and future supply is future sell pressure.

Check the ratio before every buy. Find the unlock schedule. Ask whether you would still buy at full dilution. Those three habits alone filter out a big share of bad trades.

FAQ

What is the difference between market cap and FDV?
Market cap values the tokens circulating today. FDV values the entire maximum supply at the current price.

Is a high FDV bad?
Not on its own. A high FDV only matters when it sits far above market cap, because that gap signals future unlocks.

What is a good MC/FDV ratio?
Most traders prefer a ratio above 0.5. A ratio of 1.0 means the full supply already circulates.

Why do meme coins have the same market cap and FDV?
Most meme coins launch with 100% of their supply unlocked. Circulating supply equals max supply, so both numbers match.

Where can I check market cap and FDV?
CoinGecko, CoinMarketCap and Dexscreener all show both numbers on a token’s page.
