Hyperliquid and Lighter are the two perp DEXs that matter most right now. One dominates on-chain derivatives. The other gives retail traders zero fees and cryptographic proof that every fill is fair. Both paid out massive airdrops, and farmers still chase the next one on each.
This Hyperliquid vs Lighter comparison puts them side by side on fees, liquidity, tech, markets and airdrop potential. By the end, you’ll know which one fits your trading style. You’ll also see why many traders simply use both.
Hyperliquid vs Lighter: The Quick Verdict
Hyperliquid is the better perp DEX for deep liquidity, large orders and the widest market selection, including stocks and commodities. Lighter is the better pick for retail traders who want zero trading fees and verifiable execution. Plenty of active traders run both: big size on Hyperliquid, frequent smaller trades on Lighter.
That’s the short answer. Our full Hyperliquid review and in-depth Lighter review cover each platform on its own. This post focuses on the head-to-head.

Fees: Lighter’s Biggest Weapon
Lighter charges Standard accounts nothing to trade. No maker fee, no taker fee, on perps and spot alike. In a market where venues fight over single basis points, that stands out.
Hyperliquid charges a base taker fee of 0.045% and a maker fee of 0.015%. Volume tiers, HYPE staking and referral discounts bring those numbers down. Still, a trader doing $1 million in monthly taker volume pays around $450 at base rates.
Zero fees don’t make trading free, though. Funding payments, spread and slippage apply on both venues. On a thin order book, a wider spread can cost more than a fee would have. Lighter also offers Premium accounts for high-frequency firms, which pay small fees in exchange for lower latency.
Winner: Lighter, and it isn’t close for retail traders.
Liquidity and Volume: Hyperliquid Plays in Another League
Hyperliquid processed roughly $239 billion in perp volume over 30 days as of mid-September 2026. Lighter did about $46 billion in the same window. That makes Lighter one of the biggest venues behind the leader. Even so, Hyperliquid trades about five times more.
Open interest tells the same story. Hyperliquid often holds more open positions than the next nine DEXs combined.
Why does that matter? Deeper books mean tighter spreads and less slippage on large orders. If you trade five or six figures per position, Hyperliquid’s depth often saves you more than Lighter’s zero fee. Smaller orders rarely feel the difference.
Winner: Hyperliquid.
Technology and Security
Hyperliquid runs its own Layer 1 blockchain. HyperCore handles the order book and matching, while HyperEVM adds smart contracts and DeFi on top. Critics point to a relatively small validator set. The 2025 JELLY episode also showed that validators can step in when a market goes wrong, which cuts both ways.
Lighter takes a different route. It runs as a ZK rollup on Ethereum, with custom circuits that prove every match and liquidation. You don’t need to trust the sequencer, because the proofs show how it behaved. An escape hatch also lets users withdraw straight to Ethereum if the sequencer ever fails.
Winner: depends on what you value. Lighter leads on verifiability. Hyperliquid leads on years of battle testing at massive scale.
Markets and Features
Hyperliquid lists hundreds of perp markets plus spot trading. HIP-3 lets builders deploy their own markets, which brought stock, index and commodity perps on-chain. Kraken’s parent company Payward recently announced plans to launch perps on Hyperliquid for eligible US clients. Add vaults and a growing HyperEVM app layer, and it looks more like an ecosystem than an exchange.
Lighter keeps things tighter. You get crypto perps, spot, a clean interface and the Lighter Liquidity Pool (LLP) for passive yield. Depositing into LLP requires staking LIT at a 1:10 ratio. Collateral options remain narrower too, mainly USDC and ETH.
Winner: Hyperliquid.
Airdrops and Tokens: HYPE vs LIT
Both platforms made early farmers very happy. Hyperliquid’s Genesis airdrop in November 2024 handed out 31% of the HYPE supply. It became the benchmark for every drop since. Lighter’s LIT airdrop at the end of 2025 ranked among the biggest of that year.
So what comes next? Hyperliquid has never confirmed a new season, but the community keeps farming it anyway. We track that speculation on our Hyperliquid Season 3 airdrop page. Lighter holds a large LIT reserve for future rewards, which keeps farmers trading there as well. Our Lighter project page follows every new campaign.
The token models differ too. Nearly all Hyperliquid fees flow into HYPE buybacks through the Assistance Fund. Lighter earns nothing from retail trades, so LIT buybacks come from LLP earnings, liquidations and USDC yield instead.
Want to farm both without betting on direction? Many traders hedge a long on one venue with a short on the other. Our delta-neutral airdrop farming guide walks through that setup step by step.
Winner: draw. Both reward active traders, and neither promises anything.

FAQ
Is Lighter cheaper than Hyperliquid?
Yes, for retail traders. Lighter charges 0% maker and taker fees on Standard accounts. Hyperliquid’s base rates sit at 0.045% taker and 0.015% maker, before discounts.
Which has more liquidity, Hyperliquid or Lighter?
Hyperliquid, by a wide margin. It trades roughly five times Lighter’s monthly perp volume, so large orders fill with less slippage.
Is Lighter built on Hyperliquid?
No. Lighter runs as a ZK rollup on Ethereum. Hyperliquid runs on its own Layer 1 blockchain.
Can I farm airdrops on Hyperliquid and Lighter at the same time?
Yes. Many farmers trade both, often with hedged positions across the two venues. Neither platform guarantees a future airdrop, so size trades on their own merit.
Can US traders use Hyperliquid or Lighter?
Neither platform officially serves US users. Kraken’s parent plans a permissioned route to Hyperliquid perps for eligible US clients, but that isn’t live yet.
