What Is Token Vesting? Cliffs and Unlocks Explained (2026)

Token vesting is a schedule that releases tokens to their owners gradually instead of all at once. Teams, investors and sometimes airdrop recipients receive their allocation over months or years. Until tokens vest, the holder cannot sell them.

Vesting matters to every trader and farmer, because locked tokens become sell pressure later. So understanding the schedule tells you when supply will hit the market. The three key terms also appear in our crypto airdrop glossary: vesting, cliff and unlock.

Why Projects Use Vesting

Imagine a launch without any locks. Founders and early investors hold huge allocations at tiny prices. On day one, they could sell everything and crash the chart.

Vesting prevents that. It forces insiders to wait, which aligns them with the project for longer. In addition, it gives the market time to absorb new supply in smaller pieces.

For that reason, serious investors read the vesting schedule before anything else. A project with no locks for insiders is a red flag.

The Three Terms You Need

Vesting is the overall schedule. For example, a team allocation might vest over four years.

A cliff is the waiting period at the start. During the cliff, nothing unlocks at all. A one-year cliff means insiders receive their first tokens after twelve months.

An unlock is the moment tokens become tradable. Unlocks can happen in one large batch or in small steps.

Two release styles are common. With linear vesting, a little unlocks every day or month. With cliff vesting, by contrast, a big chunk unlocks on one date. Many projects combine both.

There is one more term to know. The TGE unlock is the share that becomes liquid at launch. Our guide to what TGE means in crypto covers that day.

How Unlocks Affect the Price

An unlock adds supply. If demand stays the same, the price tends to fall. Therefore, traders watch unlock calendars closely.

Size matters most. An unlock worth 1% of circulating supply barely registers. However, one that adds 20% overnight can weigh on the chart for weeks.

The recipient matters as well. Investors who bought at a fraction of the current price have every reason to sell. Team members often sell part of theirs too.

Interestingly, the drop often starts early. Traders sell ahead of a known unlock, so the price can dip before the date and recover after it.

This is also why two numbers deserve attention. A low market cap with a huge fully diluted value means most tokens are still locked. Our market cap vs FDV guide explains that gap.

Vesting and Airdrops

Most airdrops arrive fully unlocked. Still, more projects now vest part of the drop.

Some release a portion at claim and the rest over several months. Others let you choose between a small amount now or a larger amount later. A few add bonuses for recipients who stake instead of selling.

Projects do this to reduce the launch-day dump. For farmers, it changes the math. A vested airdrop is worth less today than its headline number suggests.

So always read the claim terms. Allocation size is only half the story, as our guide on how airdrop allocations are calculated shows.

How to Check a Vesting Schedule

You can usually find the schedule in three places:

  • The project’s tokenomics page or documentation
  • Token unlock tracking sites, which list upcoming dates
  • The vesting contracts on-chain, for those who can read them

When you look, ask four questions. How much is liquid at launch? When does the first cliff end? Who receives the next unlock? And how large is it compared with the circulating supply?

Our guides have no cliff and no lockup, so you get everything on day one. If that is worth something to you, sign up through our OKX or Bybit links. It costs you nothing and supports the site.

Final Words

Token vesting decides when locked supply reaches the market. Cliffs delay it, unlocks release it, and prices react to both. Therefore, check the schedule before you buy a new token or value an airdrop. Look at what is liquid today, what unlocks next and who receives it. That habit takes five minutes and prevents many unpleasant surprises.

FAQ

What is token vesting? Token vesting is a schedule that releases tokens gradually to teams, investors or airdrop recipients. Holders cannot sell their tokens until they vest.

What is a cliff in token vesting? A cliff is the initial period during which no tokens unlock. After it ends, the first batch releases and the regular schedule begins.

Do token unlocks make the price drop? Often, but not always. Large unlocks add supply and usually create sell pressure. The effect depends on the size, the recipients and how much the market already priced in.

Are airdrops vested? Most are fully unlocked at claim. However, some projects vest part of the airdrop over months to reduce selling at launch.

Where can I see a token’s unlock schedule? Check the project’s tokenomics documentation or a token unlock tracking site. Both list the dates, the amounts and who receives each unlock.
