Safety vs Fees After the Hack

Kraken vs Binance is now the clearest security matchup in crypto. Kraken has run since 2011 without ever losing customer funds to a hack. Binance, the world’s biggest exchange, just lost about $6.3 billion from its hot wallets on October 29, 2026.

Quick verdict: Kraken wins on security, transparency and regulation, making it the safer home for anyone who values sleep over fees. Binance still wins on trading costs, coin selection, liquidity and reward programs. If you trade actively and live outside the EU, Binance remains hard to replace. For everything else, Kraken is the calmer choice this week.

For the full breakdowns, see our Kraken review and our Binance review.

Security: Kraken’s Home Turf

Kraken built its whole identity around security, and it has the record to back it up. It has never lost customer funds to a breach since its 2011 launch. Roughly 95% of deposits sit in geographically spread, air-gapped cold storage.

The account protections go further than most exchanges. Kraken supports FIDO2 hardware security keys, and its Global Settings Lock freezes account changes even if someone steals your login. It also pioneered Proof of Reserves audits years before they became an industry standard.

Binance, meanwhile, just suffered the biggest hack in crypto history. Attackers used a compromised DevOps engineer’s laptop to reach a system that could submit withdrawals, then drained about $6.3 billion across several blockchains. Our Binance hack post mortem walks through every step.

To be fair, Binance’s response has been strong. Roughly $3 billion is frozen, and the exchange has reserved over $6.34 billion of its own funds to cover users. Still, on pure track record, Kraken wins this round without a contest.

Regulation: Kraken Again

Kraken runs a US-headquartered, heavily regulated operation and holds a MiCA license. That means European users can trade there legally and with full consumer protections.

Binance lost that option on July 1, 2026, when it failed to secure a MiCA license in time. Add its $4.3 billion US settlement from 2023, and the regulatory gap is wide.

The momentum is pointing Kraken’s way, too. Hyperliquid recently named Kraken’s parent company as its intended first regulated HIP-3 deployer in the US, as we covered in our Kraken HIP-3 breakdown.

Fees: Binance Is Much Cheaper

Here, the tables turn. Kraken charges for its security pedigree on every trade.

On spot, Kraken Pro starts at 0.25% maker and 0.40% taker. Binance charges a flat 0.10%, and paying in BNB knocks another 25% off. That makes Binance roughly two to four times cheaper for most spot traders.

Futures are closer. Both start at 0.02% maker and 0.05% taker on standard contracts. However, Binance’s USDC-margined perps drop to 0.00% maker and 0.04% taker, which is hard for anyone to beat.

If you trade often, those differences add up fast.

Coins, Liquidity and Products: Binance Wins

Binance offers the deepest order books in crypto, especially on BTC and ETH. It lists more than 600 coins across 1,500+ pairs, with leverage up to 125x on futures.

Kraken keeps a smaller, more curated coin list and lower leverage limits. Its strengths lie elsewhere: staking, a polished Pro terminal and smooth fiat rails in the US and Europe.

For altcoin hunters and high-volume traders, Binance’s range is simply bigger.

Binance runs the industry’s biggest reward machine. Launchpool, Megadrop and HODLer Airdrops have handed out valuable new tokens for years, although many regions, including the EU, can’t access them anymore.

Kraken has no comparable launchpool. Even so, it runs promotions from time to time. Right now, its Halloween campaign gives away 1,000 SOL, which you can enter through our Kraken Halloween sweepstakes listing.

Kraken or Binance: Which One Fits You?

Kraken suits you if you:

  • Put security and a clean track record above everything
  • Live in the US or EU and want a fully licensed venue
  • Hold long term, stake or trade at a moderate pace

Binance suits you if you:

  • Trade a lot and want the lowest fees
  • Need the widest choice of coins and deep liquidity
  • Chase launchpool and holder rewards in a supported region

No matter which you choose, never keep everything in one place. If this week taught us anything, it’s that even the biggest exchange can get hit. For a wider list of options, read our Binance alternatives guide.

Keep This Content Free

Comparing exchanges honestly takes time, especially in a week like this, and we keep every word free. If Kraken’s security record wins you over, open your account through our Kraken referral link. Prefer Binance’s fees once withdrawals reopen? Then use our Binance referral link. Either way, it costs you nothing extra.

Kraken vs Binance: Final Words

So, Kraken vs Binance, who comes out on top?

On security, transparency and regulation, Kraken wins clearly. Fifteen years without losing customer funds is rare in crypto, and this week made that record look even better.

On fees, liquidity, coin choice and rewards, Binance still leads. Its quick, well-funded response to the hack also suggests users will come out whole.

Our advice stays the same: split your funds across platforms and keep long-term holdings in self-custody. For more matchups, check our full exchange review hub.
