PAPER staking pays USDC to anyone who locks the PaperTrade token, and every dollar of that USDC comes from other traders losing. Stake PAPER, claim USDC, repeat. Nine days after launch, stakers have claimed more than $52 million. This guide covers how the money flows, what a token earns, and why the number keeps changing.
If you need the full platform tour first, start with my PaperTrade review. This post only covers the staking side.
What PAPER Is Before You Stake It
PAPER is a loss rebate. The contract mints it when you close a trade at a loss or get liquidated on PaperTrade. The starting rate was 100 PAPER per $1 lost while the liquidity pool sat under $2 million. The rate decays as the pool grows, so later losers earn fewer tokens per dollar.
Supply started at zero. There is no team allocation, no investor allocation, and no airdrop. As a result, the only way PAPER exists is through realized losses. About 8.55 billion tokens have been minted so far.
Transfers are still locked. You cannot send PAPER to another wallet or sell it on a DEX. Staking and unstaking are the only two things the token can do today, which explains why 8.48 billion of the 8.55 billion sit in the staking contract.
Where the USDC Rewards Come From
Two streams feed stakers. Both depend on trading activity, not on any treasury.
Stream one is the winner fee. PaperTrade charges 2% on adjusted profit when a trader closes a winning position. A slice of that fee flows to stakers. Winners pay the fee in USDC, so the reward lands in USDC.
Stream two is the surplus. PaperTrade’s pool has a soft cap at $5 million. Once the pool holds more than that, every extra dollar that traders lose goes straight to stakers instead of staying in the pool. In other words, stakers collect the overflow from a casino that keeps filling up.
Neither stream has a fixed rate. Consequently, there is no APY to quote. Rewards rise when traders lose more and fall when they lose less, and the token count in the staking contract spreads each day’s payout across everyone.
How Much One PAPER Earns
The best public data point comes from the launch-day whale. That wallet staked 252 million PAPER and claimed about $1.73 million in USDC over the first few days, averaging $220,000 a day. Divide it out and you get roughly 0.00087 USDC per PAPER per day during that window.
At the current Hyperliquid perp price of about $0.024, that would be close to 3.6% a day on the token’s value. Enjoy that number, because it belongs to the past. Launch week was the loudest the pool will ever be, with $138 million of predeposits and $10 billion volume days.
The formula itself never changes. Daily USDC distributed, divided by total staked PAPER, equals your reward per token. Both inputs move every day. The staking dashboard shows cumulative rewards, so you can track the daily delta yourself.
How to Stake and Claim
Open the staking page inside the PaperTrade exchange. Your minted PAPER shows as available balance. Enter the amount, confirm, and the tokens move into the contract. Rewards accrue to your staked balance from that point.
Claiming is a separate click. Accumulated USDC shows as claimable, and the claim transaction sends it to your trading balance. From there, you can withdraw through the same Circle route your deposit used, or trade it. Unstaking works the same way in reverse, with no transfer option at the end.
The full click-by-click sits in our Papertrade airdrop listing, including the dashboards for pool size and queue debt.
What the Hyperliquid Perp Changes
Since October 18, PAPER has traded as a 3x perp on Hyperliquid. Staked tokens still cannot move, but they now have a market price. That opens two moves.
First, stakers can hedge. Short PAPER-USDC against the staked bag, keep collecting USDC, and remove the token price risk. I walked through the listing and the hedge logic in PAPER on Hyperliquid.
Second, the market now prices the reward stream. If daily USDC falls, the perp should fall with it. Watch the two together. A rising token on falling rewards is a warning, not a gift.
The Risks of Staking PAPER
Rewards can go to zero. Stakers only earn when traders lose, and losses fall when farmers hedge or traders leave. The first week beat Pump.fun and Hyperliquid combined on revenue. That pace already slowed.
Your principal is also illiquid. Unstaking frees the token, but you still cannot sell it anywhere. The perp is a price, not an exit. Until transfers unlock, your PAPER is worth exactly what it earns.
Admin control exists. A 2-of-3 multisig can pause the venue and change fee parameters, with a 7-day timelock on upgrades. Fee changes hit staking income directly.
Finally, treat the loss as a loss. Minting PAPER does not reimburse the trade. If you lose $1,000 to earn tokens, you need the USDC stream plus the eventual token price to beat $1,000. The early whales cleared that bar within days. Anyone starting now faces a lower mint rate and a smaller share of a shrinking pie.
Keep This Content Free
Staking pays stakers, not writers, and PaperTrade still has no referral program. The PAPER perp lives on Hyperliquid, so our Hyperliquid link is the one way to support this cluster. For centralized trading, OKX and Bybit remain our picks.
Final Words
PAPER staking is the simplest part of PaperTrade and the most important. The token does nothing else. It cannot move, it cannot trade, and it only pays while other people lose.
That design made early stakers rich on paper and in USDC. It also means every new staker dilutes the pool while the losses shrink. Track daily rewards against staked supply, hedge the token on Hyperliquid if you have size, and stop treating the launch-week numbers as a baseline. They were the peak.
FAQ
What does PAPER staking pay?
USDC. Stakers receive a share of the 2% fee on winning trades plus every dollar of trader losses above the $5 million pool cap. More than $52 million has been paid out so far.
Is there a PAPER staking APY?
No. Rewards depend on daily trader losses divided by total staked supply. Both numbers change every day, so any quoted APY is a snapshot.
How much PAPER is staked?
About 8.48 billion of the 8.55 billion minted, because staking is the only use the token has while transfers stay locked.
Can you unstake PAPER?
Yes, at any time. Unstaked tokens return to your balance but still cannot be transferred or sold.
Where can you see PAPER staking rewards?
On the staking dashboard inside the PaperTrade exchange. It shows your staked balance, claimable USDC, and cumulative rewards distributed.
Do staking rewards cover trading losses?
Sometimes. The launch-day whale recovered a $979,000 loss within three days. Later entrants mint fewer tokens per dollar and share a smaller reward pool, so the math gets worse over time.
