This PaperTrade review comes from nine days of using it, not reading about it. The short version: PaperTrade is a legit onchain perp exchange on HyperEVM, with 1000x leverage and a token that pays you for losing. It works as advertised. However, it is a casino where you play the house, and right now the house is crowded.
I covered the model on launch day in what is PaperTrade. Since then, PAPER has gained a price on Hyperliquid, stakers have pulled more than $52 million in USDC, and I have learned what small size buys you here. Not much. Let’s go through the whole thing.
PaperTrade at a Glance
Pros:
- Up to 1000x leverage on BTC and ETH with zero slippage and zero funding
- Losing trades mint PAPER, which stakes for USDC
- Fully onchain, no team tokens, no VC tokens, no premine
- Tiny minimum: 10 USDC plus a $1 activation fee
Cons:
- You trade against one pool, not an order book
- Winners wait in a queue when the pool runs low
- A 2-of-3 multisig can pause and reprice the venue
- Thin liquidity on the PAPER perp, 3x cap, no spot market yet
Verdict: worth a small, deliberate test. Not a main trading venue.
How PaperTrade Actually Works
Most perp DEXs match you against another trader. PaperTrade does not. Every position opens and closes against a single liquidity pool the team calls the Martingaler LP. Prices come from the midpoint of Hyperliquid’s best bid and offer. Your order never touches that book, which is why there is no slippage.
The pool started at zero on October 10. Nobody seeded it. The only money inside is what traders have lost since launch, and that money pays the winners. When the pool cannot cover a win, your margin returns immediately and the profit enters an onchain queue. New losses pay the queue in order.
That queue is the heart of this review. I will get to my own experience with it below. For a conventional order book with real depth, start with our Hyperliquid review instead.
Fees, Leverage, and the Catch
Opening a trade costs nothing. Closing a winner does. PaperTrade takes 2% of adjusted profit, and the adjustment follows an asymmetric curve borrowed from Rollbit. Small moves lose a bigger slice than large moves. As a result, scalping at 1000x is far harder than the headline suggests.
Losses go to the pool in full. A 0.1% move against you wipes a 1000x position, and that wipe is exactly what mints your PAPER. Each position carries isolated margin. The team capped positions at $10 million at launch, then cut open-position limits further after a manipulation incident I cover in the risks section.
Beginners should treat the leverage slider as a warning, not an invitation. Our trading fundamentals series exists for exactly this reason.
PAPER: The Token You Earn by Losing
PAPER has no airdrop, no sale, and no allocation. Supply started at zero. Close a losing trade or get liquidated and the contract mints PAPER to your wallet, at 100 PAPER per dollar lost while the pool sat under $2 million. Above that, the rate decays as the pool grows.
Staking is where the money is. Winning closes pay a revenue share to stakers, and every dollar of losses above the $5 million pool cap goes to stakers too. Nine days in, the numbers look like this: about 8.55 billion PAPER minted, 8.48 billion of it staked, and over $52 million in USDC claimed.
Since October 18, PAPER also trades as a 3x perp on Hyperliquid, deployed by Paragon under HIP-3. The token itself still cannot move between wallets. I broke that listing down in PAPER on Hyperliquid, including the farmer who turned a $979,000 loss into roughly $5 million in value.
My Deposit and the Queue Problem
I started with a 99 USDC test on launch day. The route runs from Ethereum through Circle to HyperCore, then into PaperTrade. Fees came to about $0.25 plus the $1 activation. Clean, fast, no complaints.
Then I tried to farm it properly. I pre-deposited $5,000 for the launch and placed trades. Every single one landed in the settlement queue with about 4,000 wallets ahead of me. So I added another $5,000. That moved me to roughly 3,000 in line. At that point I gave up. Launch-day PaperTrade was a whale game, and $10,000 was not whale money.
Maybe a return trip a few days later would have cleared. Life got busy, other trades paid, and I never went back. Consequently, I hold no PaperTrade position and no PAPER. The lesson for you: small accounts do not farm this efficiently. The early mint rate rewarded size, and the queue punished patience.
If you still want to try, our Papertrade airdrop listing walks through every click.
The Risks You Are Taking
Pool insolvency is the obvious one. A pool funded only by losses can run dry, and then winners wait with no timeline. Queue debt shows on the House dashboard, so watch it before sizing up.
Price manipulation already happened. One wallet spent about $52,000 in Hyperliquid fees pushing $231 million of ETH volume, moved the reference price, and pulled $1.28 million out of PaperTrade. The team cut position limits afterward. Another trader ran seven figures of profit on launch day, then lost $450,000 when thirty shorts got liquidated. Volatility cuts both ways here.
Admin keys exist. A 2-of-3 multisig held by izebel_eth, blurr and UngusTrade can pause opens, freeze markets and change fees. Upgrades sit behind a 7-day timelock, which helps, but it is still a small group with a lot of control.
Finally, the reward loop needs fresh losses. If farmers hedge and traders get careful, staking income falls. The first week beat Pump.fun and Hyperliquid combined on revenue. Week nine will not.
Who Should Use PaperTrade
Farmers with size and a hedge. The play is to take a controlled loss, stake the PAPER, and short the Hyperliquid perp against it. That is the delta neutral approach from our delta neutral farming guide, applied to a venue that pays you to lose. The 3x cap and thin book limit how big that hedge can get.
Degens who want 1000x will find it, and most will mint PAPER quickly. Serious traders have better options. Our ranking of the best perp DEX platforms covers venues with real liquidity, and the best DEX airdrops list covers farms with less house edge.
The last venue I reviewed was Trade.xyz, which also runs on HIP-3. Same rails, completely different idea.
Keep This Content Free
PaperTrade has no referral program, so this review earns us nothing. The PAPER perp and the reference prices both live on Hyperliquid, and our Hyperliquid link is the one place in this cluster where you can support us. For centralized trading, OKX and Bybit remain our picks.
Final Words
PaperTrade delivers what it promises. The leverage is real, the mint is automatic, and the USDC rewards have paid out tens of millions in nine days. Early losers with size are the big winners, and that is by design.
My own run was a failure, honestly. Two deposits, zero fills, one lesson about queues. I would still rather have tested it than written about it from the outside. Treat it as a paid experiment with a clear budget, hedge if you have size, and keep your main stack on a venue with a real order book.

FAQ
Is PaperTrade legit?
Yes. It is a fully onchain perp exchange on HyperEVM with public contracts, a 7-day upgrade timelock, and over $52 million in USDC already paid to stakers. Legit does not mean safe. You trade against a pool that can run dry.
How much leverage does PaperTrade offer?
Up to 1000x on BTC and ETH, with zero slippage and zero funding. A 0.1% move against you liquidates a 1000x position.
What are PaperTrade’s fees?
Opening is free. Profitable closes pay 2% of adjusted profit, and the adjustment curve hits small moves hardest. Losses go to the pool in full.
How do you earn PAPER on PaperTrade?
Close a trade at a loss or get liquidated. The contract mints PAPER automatically, starting at 100 PAPER per $1 lost and decaying as the pool grows.
Can you sell PAPER yet?
Not directly. Transfers are still locked. A 3x PAPER-USDC perp trades on Hyperliquid, so you can hedge or speculate on the price.
What is the minimum deposit on PaperTrade?
10 USDC, plus a one-time 1 USDC account activation fee.
Who runs PaperTrade?
Co-founders Jez (Colin Hong, ex Morgan Stanley and Standard Crypto) and Blurr. A 2-of-3 multisig with izebel_eth, blurr and UngusTrade holds admin control.
