Bitcoin Fed September: One Date Decides the Month

A month ago I wrote that August and September form crypto’s worst two-month window. I laid out the data, set my buy orders, and went back to the pool with the kids. Bitcoin read my blog and did the exact opposite. BTC closed August up 25%, one of the strongest Augusts in its history, and it now trades at $77,746 while oil rips past $90 and gold bleeds. So let’s own the miss, look at what actually happened, and talk about why this entire Bitcoin Fed September story comes down to a single date: September 15.

August Broke the Pattern (And My Orders Never Filled)

In my Bitcoin August blog, I showed that every midterm-year August on record had closed red. Small sample size, I warned, but the streak was 100%. Well, the sample just got bigger and the streak is dead. Bitcoin printed roughly 25% in August 2026, spot ETFs had their best month of the year, and inflows ran nine days straight into month-end with close to a billion dollars in a single week.

My limit orders between $54K and $38K never stood a chance. Price went the other way from day one. The timewise DCA I started on August 14 saved the plan, because those twice-weekly buys kept me accumulating while the ladder sat untouched. My average entry is higher than the $46–52K range I hoped for, but I’m positioned instead of waiting for a dip that never came. That’s the whole point of splitting a DCA into price-based and time-based halves. You can find the coins I’m accumulating in my crypto shopping list.

Everything Is Falling Except Bitcoin

Here’s the part that has my attention more than any seasonality chart. The macro backdrop turned ugly fast. US strikes on Iranian targets near the Strait of Hormuz pushed Brent above $90. Bond yields are climbing, Japan’s 10-year hit 3% for the first time since 1996, and the yen carry trade is creaking again. Stocks are wobbling and even gold, the classic fear asset, is sliding.

Bitcoin? Chopping sideways in the high $70Ks, refusing to break. When an asset holds its ground while everything around it sells off, that’s relative strength, and relative strength into a major catalyst is exactly what I want to see as a trader. It doesn’t guarantee anything. It does tell you where the passive bid lives right now, and the ETF flow data says the same thing.

September 15: Hike Shock or Rate Cut Rally

Now the main event. The Fed meets on September 15, and for the first time in years the market genuinely doesn’t know which way this goes.

The bull case

Tom Lee of Fundstrat calls this meeting the pivot point of the year. His scenario: a short, sharp 10% drop in equities, then a strong rally, with Bitcoin running toward $150K if the Fed delivers relief. Pair that with relentless ETF inflows and the CLARITY Act, which the SEC chair expects to pass this month, and the upside case writes itself.

The bear case

The other side of the table is braced for a Warsh shock. With oil above $90 feeding straight into inflation numbers, some observers warn a rate hike is on the table, and traders are already mapping a flush toward $75K if Chair Warsh goes hawkish. A hike into a wobbling stock market would be a mistake in my view, but the Fed doesn’t trade my book, so I plan for both outcomes.

Does September Seasonality Even Matter Now?

Quick honesty check on the calendar stats, since I leaned on them last month. September was Bitcoin’s most reliable red month for years, with six straight losses from 2017 to 2022. The last three Septembers all closed green though, and after watching a “guaranteed” red August print 25%, I hold these patterns looser than ever. Seasonality is a tiebreaker, not a thesis. This month, the Fed is the thesis.

My Trade Plan Into the Fed

Full transparency as always, this is my personal play with my own money, not financial advice.

If BTC dips into the 74.4K area in the next two to three days, I’m interested in a long. That zone lines up with the pre-breakout shelf from late August, and a fast flush there right before the Fed meeting smells like a liquidity grab rather than a trend change. I want to see the dip come on declining sell pressure and the reclaim happen on expanding volume before I commit. If you’re not sure what healthy volume on a reclaim looks like, we published a full guide on trading volume that covers exactly this.

The management is simple. I’ll ladder take-profits between 75.5K and 80K, scaling out as price climbs back through the range. Half the position stays on as a runner. If Lee is right about this meeting kicking off the next leg, I don’t want to be flat at 80K watching it happen. If the level fails cleanly, I’m out and waiting on the other side of September 15 with the rest of my dry powder.

No dip, no trade. I don’t chase 77.7K three days before a coin-flip Fed meeting.

Keep This Content Free

We called the August seasonality wrong and told you anyway, because you deserve the full picture, not just the highlight reel. Costs you nothing extra and keeps the blogs coming.

Final Words

August humbled the seasonality traders, myself included. Bitcoin heads into September with a broken bearish pattern behind it, strong ETF demand under it, and a Fed meeting in front of it that could send price toward $150K or flush it to $75K. I’m not predicting the outcome. I’m positioned for the dip if it comes, laddered to take profit into strength, and holding a runner in case the bulls get their rate cut. See you on the other side of September 15.

FAQ

Why is the September 15 Fed meeting so important for Bitcoin? The market is split between expectations of a rate cut and fears of a surprise hike driven by $90 oil. A cut likely fuels the next leg up, while a hawkish surprise could trigger a sharp flush. Analysts have mapped scenarios ranging from $75K to $150K around this single event.

Did Bitcoin really break its August losing streak? Yes. Before 2026, every midterm-year August on record had closed red. Bitcoin gained about 25% this August, one of its best on record, powered largely by strong spot ETF inflows.

Is September still a bad month for Bitcoin? Historically it was the weakest month, with six straight red closes from 2017 to 2022. The last three Septembers closed green, so the pattern has clearly loosened. Macro catalysts matter far more than the calendar this year.

What is a runner in trading? A runner is the portion of a winning position you leave open after taking profit on the rest. It keeps you exposed to further upside while the banked profits protect the trade
