What is TradFi? TradFi is short for traditional finance. It means the old financial system: banks, brokers, stock exchanges, and the assets they handle, such as stocks, bonds, forex, and gold. In crypto, however, the word has picked up a second meaning. It also describes products that let you trade those assets on a crypto exchange.
That second meaning is why the term shows up everywhere now. Bybit has a full TradFi tab. Binance lists gold and Nvidia next to Bitcoin. Meanwhile, Hyperliquid traders long oil on a Sunday night. So, let’s break down what the word covers, how the products work, and where you can trade them.
What Is TradFi in Simple Terms
Traditional finance is everything that existed before crypto. For example, your bank account is TradFi. Your broker, your pension fund, and the New York Stock Exchange are TradFi too.
These systems share a few traits. First, they rely on middlemen such as banks, brokers, and clearing houses. Second, they follow strict licensing rules. Third, they keep office hours, so stock markets close at night and on weekends.
Crypto people coined the word to draw a line. On one side sits the legacy system. On the other side sits the open, always-on world of blockchains.
TradFi vs DeFi vs CeFi
These three terms get mixed up a lot. Therefore, here is the short version.
TradFi is the legacy system. Banks and brokers hold your assets, and regulators watch every step.
CeFi means centralized finance. Think of crypto exchanges like Bybit or OKX. A company holds your coins, but the assets are crypto.
DeFi means decentralized finance. Smart contracts replace the company, and you keep control of your own wallet. If that trade-off is new to you, read our guide on self-custody versus keeping coins on an exchange.
Today, though, the lines blur. CeFi exchanges sell TradFi assets, and DeFi platforms do the same. As a result, “TradFi” often just means “stocks, gold, and forex on crypto rails.”
How TradFi Trading Works on Crypto Exchanges
You rarely buy a real share on a crypto exchange. Instead, you trade a product that tracks its price. Three models dominate.
TradFi Perpetuals
Perpetuals are futures contracts without an expiry date. They work exactly like Bitcoin perps, only the chart shows Tesla or gold. In addition, they trade around the clock, including weekends. Your collateral is usually USDT or USDC.
CFDs
A CFD is a contract for difference. Forex brokers have sold them for decades. Here, a liquidity provider quotes the price, and your cost sits in the spread. Most exchanges run CFDs through MetaTrader 5, in a separate account. Leverage can run extremely high, which makes them risky for beginners.
Tokenized Stocks
Tokenized stocks are tokens backed by real shares. Because they are spot assets, they carry no leverage and no funding fees. Some even move onchain and feed new metas. For instance, we covered meme coins that pay holders in stock tokens in our tokenized stock airdrops roundup.
Bybit shows how these models fit together. Its TradFi section now holds two products: TradFi Perpetuals and CFD. Together, they cover more than 400 instruments. Furthermore, the perps use your normal trading account, so there is no extra setup.
Buying US Stocks Has Never Been This Easy
Buying US stocks has never been this easy. Today, the whole world has access through crypto and crypto platforms. All you need is a phone, some USDT, and an exchange account.
However, it wasn’t always like this. For decades, a US stock required a broker in your own country. That broker wanted a residency, a tax number, and a utility bill. As a result, billions of people were simply locked out.
I learned that the hard way. In 2016, I left the Netherlands, and my broker closed my account without asking. My NVIDIA shares were sold on the spot. After that, I spent ten years as a nomad who couldn’t buy them back. Meanwhile, I could buy any crypto on the planet in thirty seconds. The full story is in my post on the NVIDIA tokenized stock.
Now the same trade takes a minute, from anywhere. So when people ask why TradFi on crypto rails matters, this is my answer. Access no longer depends on your postcode. And I, for one, am very grateful that it’s this easy today.
Why Crypto Traders Want TradFi Assets
The demand is real. At the time of writing, monthly TradFi perp volume on crypto venues runs in the hundreds of billions. Several reasons explain the rush.
- Markets never close. News breaks on a Saturday, and you can react right away.
- One account, one collateral. Your USDT margin covers Bitcoin, gold, and Apple alike.
- Low minimums. A few dollars is enough to open a position.
- Hedging. When crypto chops sideways, stocks and metals still move.
- Pre-IPO access. Exchanges list perps on private companies before they go public. I wrote about that in my SpaceX IPO story. Similarly, our guide on how to buy Polymarket stock walks through another pre-IPO example.
Airdrop farmers have a reason of their own. Stock perps tend to swing less than altcoins, so they suit volume farming. Accordingly, our guide on farming airdrops by trading stocks explains the playbook.
Where to Trade TradFi: The Best Exchanges
Nearly every big exchange joined this race. Still, they differ in products, depth, and listings. Below are the venues we rate.
Bybit
Bybit offers the widest toolbox. You get TradFi Perpetuals, MT5 CFDs, tokenized stocks, and gold tokens under one login. Consequently, it is the easiest starting point for most readers. Our Bybit review covers fees and safety.
OKX
OKX keeps things simple. Stock perps sit in the same futures account as your crypto trades. On top of that, the owner of the New York Stock Exchange invested in OKX this year. Check the OKX review for the full picture.
MEXC
MEXC lists new markets faster than anyone. Therefore, smaller stocks and niche commodities often appear there first. Fees are among the lowest too. Read the MEXC review or go straight to MEXC with our link.
Binance
Binance arrived late but grew fast. It now holds the largest share of TradFi perp volume. So, if you want the deepest order books on gold, silver, and big US stocks, start here. Our Binance review has the details.
Hyperliquid and Trade.xyz
Prefer to keep your own keys? Then Hyperliquid is the onchain answer. Builders deploy stock, index, and commodity perps on top of it, and you trade from your wallet. Our Hyperliquid review explains the setup, and this Hyperliquid referral link gives you a fee discount.
Trade.xyz is the biggest of those builders. It focuses on equity perps and also runs a points program. You can track it on our Trade.xyz airdrop page or start trading on Trade.xyz. For more onchain venues, see our best perp DEX ranking.
Kraken
Kraken suits readers who want a regulated name. It offers tokenized stocks through xStocks, plus perps on them for eligible users. The Kraken review shows who can access what.
Bitget
Bitget comes last on this list for a reason. The exchange suffered a major hack in September 2026, so read our Bitget hack coverage before you deposit. That said, it lists the most stock and commodity perps of any major exchange. If you still want in, see the Bitget review or use our Bitget referral link.

Risks of TradFi Trading on Crypto Platforms
These products are not a free lunch. Keep the following in mind.
First, you usually don’t own the stock. A perp or CFD gives price exposure only. As a result, you get no voting rights and often no dividends.
Second, leverage cuts both ways. A stock can gap hard on earnings, and a leveraged position can vanish in minutes.
Third, weekend prices can drift. The real market is closed, so liquidity gets thin and wicks get ugly.
Fourth, rules vary by country. Many TradFi products are blocked for US or EU users. Regulators are still catching up, as we explained in our piece on whether tokenized stock airdrops are legal.
Finally, you still carry exchange risk. Hacks happen, so never park more than you need on any platform. If you are new to charts and risk management, work through our trading fundamentals series before using leverage.

Final Words
TradFi used to be a word crypto people said with a smirk. Now it is a tab on every major exchange. In short, the term means traditional finance, yet it increasingly describes stocks, gold, and forex traded on crypto rails.
For traders, that shift is good news. You get more markets, longer hours, and one account for everything. Nevertheless, treat these products with the same respect as any leveraged trade. Start small, learn the product type, and pick an exchange that fits your region.
FAQ
What does TradFi stand for?
TradFi stands for traditional finance. It covers banks, brokers, stock exchanges, and legacy assets like stocks, bonds, forex, and gold.
What is the difference between TradFi and DeFi?
TradFi relies on licensed middlemen and fixed trading hours. DeFi, by contrast, runs on smart contracts, works around the clock, and lets you hold your own assets.
Can I trade stocks on a crypto exchange?
Yes. Bybit, OKX, MEXC, Binance, Kraken, and Bitget all offer stock exposure. Hyperliquid does the same onchain. Most of it comes as perpetuals, CFDs, or tokenized stocks.
Do I own the stock when I trade TradFi perps?
No. Perps and CFDs only track the price. Tokenized stocks come closer because real shares back them, but shareholder rights depend on the issuer.
Is TradFi trading on crypto exchanges safe?
It carries the same risks as crypto derivatives. Leverage, thin weekend liquidity, and exchange hacks are the main ones. Therefore, use small size and withdraw what you don’t need.
Which exchange is best for TradFi trading?
Bybit has the broadest product range, while Binance has the deepest liquidity. MEXC lists new markets the fastest. Finally, Hyperliquid is the pick for onchain traders.
