An airdrop meta is the type of airdrop that pays best during a certain period. It is the dominant trend that most projects copy and most farmers chase. Metas usually change every one to two years, so spotting the next one early matters.
In this guide, we explain the term in plain language. After that, you will see past metas, the current ones, and the signals to watch. New to the topic? Then read our crypto airdrops explainer first.
The word “meta” comes from gaming. There, it means the most effective strategy at that moment. Crypto borrowed the term, and farmers now use it daily on X.
So, an airdrop meta is the playbook that works right now. For example, in 2020 the meta was using new DeFi apps. Later, it shifted to holding NFTs, and then to collecting points.
However, a meta is never official. Nobody announces it. Instead, it forms when one big airdrop pays well and other projects copy the model. As a result, an airdrop hunter who reads the trend early has a clear edge.
Timing decides most of your results. Early farmers face little competition, so their share of the rewards is larger. Late farmers, on the other hand, split the same pot with millions of wallets. Worse, some arrive after the airdrop snapshot and get nothing at all.
Additionally, rules get stricter as a meta ages. Projects add harder tasks and remove suspicious wallets. Our guide on why wallets get Sybil filtered shows how that plays out. Meanwhile, the average payout per wallet shrinks.
Therefore, the goal is simple. Spot the meta early, then farm the leading protocols in it. Leaders usually pay the most, because they have the most users and revenue. Want the math behind it? Then read how airdrop allocations are calculated.
A short history of airdrop metas
Looking back makes the pattern clear. Below are the main metas since we started tracking airdrops in 2017.
- 2017 to 2018: social tasks. Projects paid tokens for joining Telegram groups and following Twitter accounts.
- 2020 to 2021: retroactive DeFi. Uniswap surprised past users with 400 UNI each. Afterward, the retroactive airdrop became the standard.
- 2021 to 2022: NFT holder drops. New projects rewarded the holders of top NFT collections.
- 2022 to 2023: Layer 2 networks. Optimism and Arbitrum paid users who bridged and transacted early.
- 2023 to 2024: points. Blur, EigenLayer, and Hyperliquid turned farming into leaderboards. Our guide on airdrop points covers that era.
- 2024: tap-to-earn. Telegram games like Notcoin reached millions of players.
- 2025 onward: perp DEXs. Hyperliquid’s record drop sent farmers to trading platforms.
Notice the trigger each time. First, one huge payout landed. Then, the copycats followed.
I was very active in NFTs when that meta formed. During those years, I traded and held Bored Apes, CryptoPunks, and Pudgy Penguins. At first, I bought them as trades and collectibles. The airdrops were a bonus I did not fully expect.
Soon, however, NFT holders became a target group for new projects. Bored Ape holders received ApeCoin in 2022, for instance. Pudgy Penguins holders later received PENGU, plus drops from many other projects. Because I held several top collections, I was eligible for tons of airdrops.
Looking back, the lesson is clear. Nobody handed me a secret list. I was simply active in the right sector before the crowd arrived. Consequently, being early did most of the work.
Right now, two metas lead the market.
DEX airdrops. This meta is still going strong. Hyperliquid proved that a trading platform can pay life-changing amounts. Since then, almost every new exchange has launched a points program. Our ranking of the biggest DEX airdrops shows how large these drops became. For live options, check our list of the best DEX airdrops. In addition, we compare the platforms themselves in our best perp DEX guide. Many farmers use delta neutral farming here to build volume with limited price risk.
Tokenized stock airdrops. This one is newer. Some tokens now pay their holders in tokenized shares of real companies. Our tokenized stock airdrops guide explains how that works. Furthermore, it brought back an old format, which we cover in holder airdrops are back.
Metas rarely die forever. Instead, they go quiet and return in a new form.
Play to earn is one candidate. Gaming airdrops had a huge run in 2021, and another run is possible.
NFT airdrops are the second candidate. These days, they often come from DeFi projects that reward strong communities. In my view, two collections are most likely to be included. Miladys often receive DeFi airdrops. Pudgy Penguins remain a favorite as well.
Bored Apes, on the other hand, got much less in the last spark of NFT airdrops. The collection lost a lot of goodwill in the space. Therefore, I would not buy one hoping for many airdrops.
Still, be careful with this strategy. A top NFT costs serious money, and its price can drop sharply. As a result, the price risk can easily outweigh the airdrops.
No one can predict the next meta with certainty. However, these five signals help.
- Watch for one huge payout in a new sector. A single big airdrop usually starts the wave.
- Follow the funding. When investors pour money into one sector, tokens tend to follow.
- Count the points programs. Several similar projects launching points at once is a strong sign.
- Listen to experienced farmers. They often move weeks before the crowd.
- Pick the leaders. Within a new meta, farm the top two or three protocols first.
Finally, start small. Test a new meta with limited funds, and scale up once it proves itself.
