Bitcoin is up 2.5% today. Ethereum is up about the same. Roughly 95% of the coins on my watchlist are green the morning after the midterms. Two names are not. TRUMP is down 10.5% at $1.44, and WLFI is down 3.7% at just under 5 cents.
Short answer for anyone searching Trump coin midterms: Democrats won both the House and the Senate, and from January they control the committees that have wanted to investigate Trump’s crypto businesses since 2025. The market is pricing that in today, two months before a single subpoena can be signed.
I covered the overnight market reaction and my own trades in the Democrats sweep post this morning. This one is only about the two Trump tokens, because they are the outliers, and because I hold one of them.
What the midterms changed for Trump’s crypto
Republicans held both chambers until last night. That meant every Democratic letter about World Liberty Financial or the TRUMP meme coin was just a letter. Ranking members can ask. Chairs can compel.
That flips on January 3, 2027. Democrats will chair House Oversight, House Judiciary and House Financial Services. On the other side of the Capitol, they will chair Senate Banking and Senate Finance too. Each of those committees can issue subpoenas without the president’s approval.
A veto stops a bill. It does nothing against an oversight hearing. So while Trump can block legislation for two more years, he cannot block the investigations. The coins figured that out before most of the news coverage did.
The investigations that were only letters until last night
None of this is new. What is new is the power behind it.
In May 2025, the ranking Democrats on Oversight, Judiciary and House Administration asked Treasury for every suspicious activity report tied to World Liberty Financial and the TRUMP meme coin. Treasury did not have to answer them. Jamie Raskin separately asked for the guest list of the first meme coin dinner. I was on that list. Nothing came of it.
In February 2026, Ro Khanna announced a probe into a pre-inauguration deal between World Liberty and Sheikh Tahnoon of Abu Dhabi. TRUMP and WLFI dropped double digits that week on a press release alone. Later came the questions around the bank charter and the USD1 deal with Binance, both of which I covered in the WLFI bank charter post and the Circle shareholder lawsuit breakdown.
Stephen Lynch filed a bill in 2025 to bar the president and his family from most crypto activity. He named it the Stop TRUMP Act, and it never got a vote. Lynch is now in line to chair Financial Services.
Put those together and you get the list for 2027: Treasury records, the UAE money, the bank charter, Binance, and who bought the coins before each dinner. Every one of those files has been requested already. From January they can be demanded.
What subpoenas can and cannot do
Nothing formal happens before January 3. Today’s drop is pure repricing of the risk, not a reaction to any action.
Subpoenas also move slowly. The White House can fight them in court, and that fight can run for a year or more. Nobody is getting charged because a committee held a hearing.
What changes is the headline flow. Hearings produce clips. Document requests produce leaks. Discovery into who bought TRUMP ahead of the dinners would be the single most damaging thing for the token, because the dinners are the main reason anyone still buys it.
For a token that trades on political momentum, a steady drip of negative coverage is enough. It does not need a conviction. It only needs a camera.
The Clarity Act is probably dead for now
The second channel is legislation. The Clarity Act failed its Senate vote on September 15, one vote short of advancing, because Democrats wanted a harder ethics clause. I explained that clause in the Trump crypto ethics rule post back in July.
Democrats can now write any market structure bill they want. Expect the ethics language to get stricter, not softer, with a ban on sitting officials issuing tokens at the center. Trump will not sign that. So the likely outcome is gridlock: no Clarity Act, no stablecoin tweaks, and no rescue for the WLFI and USD1 thesis I laid out in the USD1 review.
For the wider market this is a delay, not a reversal, which is why Bitcoin shrugged it off. For WLFI, the bank charter and USD1 growth were the bull case. Both now run through a Congress that wants to look inside them.
My TRUMP position and the third dinner
Full disclosure: I hold TRUMP right now. I bought it to qualify for the third Trump dinner on November 22 in Washington, with the leaderboard snapshot on November 12. As with the Mar-a-Lago dinner, the whole thing is hedged with a perp short, so today’s 10% move is noise to me. Funding has been positive, which means the hedge pays me to wait.
The drop still matters for one reason. The leaderboard counts coins, not dollars. A cheaper TRUMP makes it cheaper for late entrants to buy their way up the board, and that is the only real risk to my seat. If you are thinking about the same play, the how to buy TRUMP coin guide explains the spot and perp side.
WLFI is a different story. Most of my tokens are locked, as every reader of the one year WLFI recap knows. There is no hedge for a bag you cannot sell. Polymarket had Democrats at 88% for the House going in, and I follow those odds closely for exactly this reason. Our Polymarket page explains how those markets work.
About that German documentary
One more thing from last night. ProSieben’s Galileo aired a midterms episode on November 3, and I was in it as the crypto investor who got access to the president through a meme coin. They filmed in my office in September. Anyone in Germany can rewatch the episode on Joyn. I’ll get some better images and clips later this week.
The timing is almost funny. The segment aired while the votes were being counted, and by the time I woke up the coin it is about had dropped 10%. The full history of my World Liberty coverage, from the presale to now, lives under the World Liberty Finance tag.

Final Words
Yes, the Democrats can look into Trump’s crypto, and they have said for eighteen months that they will. The difference after last night is that they can make people answer. That does not mean charges. It means two years of hearings, document fights and headlines, for two tokens that live on headlines.
I expected a Bitcoin rally once the votes were counted, as I wrote in the midterms Bitcoin post, and so far the broad market agrees. The Trump coins are the exception, and they will probably stay the exception until January gives the market something concrete to trade.

FAQ
Why is Trump coin down after the midterms?
Democrats won control of both chambers of Congress, which gives them subpoena power over Trump’s crypto ventures from January 2027. TRUMP fell about 10% and WLFI about 4% on the day, while Bitcoin and most altcoins rose.
Can Democrats actually investigate the Trump meme coin?
Yes. Committee chairs can issue subpoenas and hold hearings without the president’s consent. Democrats requested Treasury records on TRUMP and World Liberty in 2025 and opened a probe into a UAE deal in February 2026, but lacked the power to compel answers until now.
Does a Democratic Congress affect WLFI more than TRUMP?
Probably. WLFI’s bull case rests on the bank charter and USD1 growth, both of which now face oversight and a stalled Clarity Act. TRUMP trades mostly on dinner announcements and headlines.
When do the investigations start?
The new Congress is sworn in on January 3, 2027. Nothing formal can happen before then, and court fights over subpoenas can take a year or longer.
Is the third Trump dinner still happening?
Yes. The leaderboard snapshot is November 12 and the dinner is November 22 in Washington. A lower TRUMP price makes it cheaper for new entrants to climb the board.
