What the Filing Says and Why ZEC Pumped

Quick question before we start. If Zcash transactions are private, how exactly will the ETF tell us how much ZEC it holds? Asking for a friend who doesn’t understand shielded pools. Fine, the fund uses Coinbase Custody and transparent addresses, so the joke doesn’t hold up. But I had to get it out of my system.

Now the actual story. Grayscale filed its fifth amendment for a spot Zcash ETF with the SEC today. That’s two amendments in one week, a sponsor fee locked in, authorized participants named, and the parent company lining up a nine-figure contribution. This is what the final stretch looks like. Mainstream outlets will be all over it tomorrow, so let’s get ahead of them.

What Grayscale Filed

Grayscale has been running a Zcash Trust since 2017. It trades over the counter under ZCSH, mostly for accredited investors, and the shares have historically traded at a discount or premium to the underlying ZEC because there’s no creation and redemption mechanism. The conversion fixes that by turning it into a spot ETF listed on NYSE Arca.

The fourth amendment landed on August 19. The fifth came today. Between them, a few things changed:

  • The product gets renamed simply “The Zcash ETF”
  • Sponsor fee set at 2.5% per year
  • Jane Street and Virtu named as authorized participants
  • Coinbase Custody as custodian, BNY Mellon as administrator
  • Creations mostly in cash, with in-kind creation still allowed but no in-kind redemptions
  • Baskets of 10,000 shares for authorized participants

The ticker is a bit messy right now. Grayscale’s own filing language points to keeping ZCSH, while The Block’s coverage of today’s amendment reports ZCH. I’d wait for NYSE Arca to confirm before you go hunting for it in your brokerage app.

One more detail matters. The SEC still has to declare the registration effective. Nothing trades until that happens. Five amendments, a fee, and named market makers is about as far as these filings go before approval, but it isn’t approval yet.

DCG Wants to Seed It With 200,000 ZEC

This is the part that moved price. The filing disclosed that DCG International Investments, a subsidiary of Grayscale’s parent company Digital Currency Group, is in talks to contribute roughly 200,000 ZEC to the fund in exchange for shares. At today’s price that’s around $162 million.

The talks are non-binding. DCG could buy more, less, or nothing. But think about what it signals. Barry Silbert’s group has been vocal about Zcash for over a year, and now they want to anchor the ETF with a position worth more than the entire trust held at the end of March. Seed capital at launch also means the ETF opens with real size instead of limping out with a few million in assets.

Two separate demand stories are now stacked on each other. The ETF gives traditional brokerage accounts a way to buy ZEC. The DCG contribution is a direct bid for the coin itself.

The Zcash ETF Price Reaction

ZEC is trading around $810, up roughly 40% today and close to 65% on the week. Market cap is near $13 billion, comfortably back in the top 15. This is a new 2026 high, well above the $688 peak from January, and the highest ZEC has traded since its 2018 launch-era prices.

Zoom out and the chart tells a bigger story. ZEC bottomed around $410 on June 5, the day the Orchard vulnerability went public. That was the bug found with AI tooling that could have minted unlimited counterfeit ZEC, and nobody could prove it hadn’t already been used. I got stopped out on that crash myself and wrote it up at the time in our ZEC exploit breakdown. The wider question of whether AI would start cracking other chains got its own post on AI crypto exploit risk.

From that low to today is nearly a double. The turning point was the Ironwood upgrade on July 28, which retired the affected shielded pool and gave node operators a way to verify the total supply. Once the supply question had an answer, the fear trade was over. Grayscale’s filing even cites both the Orchard vulnerability and Ironwood in its risk section, so the SEC has clearly been briefed on it.

Price went from $410 to $490 in a slow grind through July and early August, coiled in a tight range around the 50-day EMA for a week, and then broke out on the fourth amendment. Today’s candle took out the January high in one shot and kept going. RSI is now deep above 70 on the daily.

A word of caution here. A 40% day on news is parabolic, and parabolic candles usually give back 30–50% of the spike within days. That would put a healthy retrace somewhere around $680–720, right on top of the old January high. If you’re buying at $810 tonight, don’t blame the blog on the first red candle. I’m not touching it up here.

My Position

Zcash is one of the five coins on my crypto shopping list for this cycle, sitting at a 5% allocation. The plan was two DCA buys per week.

I managed exactly one this week. Unfortunately. The Amsterdam trip prep ate my Tuesday and by the time I looked at the chart again ZEC was already $280 higher. That’s the thing about DCA though: missing a buy is annoying, but it doesn’t break the strategy. The next scheduled buy goes in regardless of price, and if we get that pullback toward the old January high I’ll add the missed one there.

What I won’t do is chase today’s candle. The filing can take weeks to go effective. There will be dips.

Final Words

The Grayscale Zcash ETF is the first US spot fund for a privacy coin, and that alone makes it a different animal from the Bitcoin and Ethereum products. Add a 2.5% fee, a parent company seeding it with 200,000 ZEC, and a chart that has nearly doubled from an exploit-driven bottom, and you have one of the more interesting altcoin stories of the summer.

Approval isn’t done. Price is extended short term. But the setup I laid out in the crypto bottom shopping list back in July is playing out, and ZEC earning its 5% slot is a good feeling. I’ll keep DCAing. Twice a week, if the calendar lets me this time.

FAQ

Is the Grayscale Zcash ETF approved?
Not yet. Grayscale has filed five amendments and the SEC must still declare the registration effective before shares can list on NYSE Arca.

What is the Zcash ETF ticker?
Reports conflict. Grayscale’s filing references ZCSH, the existing trust ticker, while some coverage of the latest amendment mentions ZCH. Wait for the exchange to confirm.

What is the Zcash ETF fee?
The sponsor fee is set at 2.5% per year, significantly higher than most spot Bitcoin and Ethereum ETFs.

Why is ZEC pumping?
The combination of the ETF amendments, DCG’s plan to contribute around 200,000 ZEC to the fund, and a broader recovery from the June exploit crash has pushed ZEC up about 65% this week to a new 2026 high above $800.

How much ZEC does the Grayscale trust hold?
As of March 31 the trust held roughly 391,000 ZEC. The proposed DCG contribution would add another 200,000 on top.
