Scott Bessent is set to take the office as the Treasury Secretary in President Donald Trump’s administration team. Bessent will play a key role in implementing the government’s cryptocurrency agenda, which Trump laid out in executive orders last week.

Bessent, who is going to be a replacement of Janet Yellen, is expected to lead federal control in a ‘crypto business’ friendly direction. Even though Bessent did not openly vouch for crypto during his confirmation hearing , he is a well known crypto enthusiast. In fact, Bessent’s financial disclosures revealed that he had invested hundreds of thousands of dollars in a Bitcoin ETF before liquidating them upon accepting Trump’s nomination
Bessent’s department is tasked with delivering a report within two months on how existing regulations should be revised or whether new rules should be introduced. Moreover, the broader group has six months to propose crypto regulations.
President Trump’s order also mandates the new Treasury Secretary to dismantle crypto policies introduced under former President Joe Biden. For instance, scrapping work on a US central bank digital currency (CBDC).
Bessent too has voiced apprehension about CBDC, telling senators during his confirmation hearing that he saw “no reason” to pursue it.
Moreover, Bessent will also oversee the Financial Crimes Enforcement Network (FinCEN), which has been active in crypto enforcement, particularly against mixing services that provide transaction anonymity even for cases related to human trafficking and child exploitation.
Bessent’s department will also manage US financial sanctions.
Bessent’s nomination was confirmed on Monday, and has been hailed by crypto insiders and lawmakers alike. Senator Mike Crapo, who chairs the Senate Financial Committee, praised Bessent as “one of the sharpest minds in global finance”. Similarly, Ripple CEO Brad Garlinghouse stated , “He’ll [Bessent] be an incredible leader for Americans!”
