How Many Bitcoin Does Satoshi Own? And Is He Still Alive?

Everyone argues about who Satoshi Nakamoto is. Almost nobody asks the more practical question: how big is his stack?

Here is the short answer. Satoshi Nakamoto owns an estimated 1.096 million BTC, roughly 5.5% of all Bitcoin in circulation. At today’s Bitcoin price near $81,000, that stack is worth close to $89 billion. Not a single coin has ever moved.

That last detail matters more than the number itself. It is also the foundation of my theory on whether Satoshi is still breathing. First, the data.

How Many Bitcoin Does Satoshi Nakamoto Own?

No one signed a statement confirming the amount. The figure comes from blockchain forensics.

Cryptographer Sergio Demian Lerner studied Bitcoin’s earliest blocks and found a distinct mining fingerprint. One dominant miner ran the network almost alone from January 2009 into early 2010. Lerner nicknamed this miner “Patoshi” to keep the identity debate out of his research.

The Patoshi pattern covers around 22,000 blocks. Each block paid 50 BTC back then, which puts the haul at roughly 1.1 million coins. Arkham’s on-chain data narrows it down further, tagging about 1,096,000 BTC across addresses linked to Bitcoin’s creator.

Only the 50 coins from the genesis block are technically unspendable. Everything else could move tomorrow, in theory. In practice, nothing has moved in over fifteen years.

How Much Is Satoshi’s Stack Worth Today?

At $81,000 per coin, Satoshi sits on roughly $89 billion. At this cycle’s highs, the stack briefly topped $110 billion.

Back in 2021, we asked whether Satoshi is the richest person in the world. The 2026 answer: not even close to the top spot, since the mega-cap tech founders play in a different league now. He would land somewhere around 24th on the Forbes list.

Within crypto, nobody compares. His holdings beat BlackRock’s IBIT ETF at around 761,000 BTC and Strategy at around 712,000 BTC. The biggest single Bitcoin position on earth belongs to a ghost.

What Happens if Satoshi’s Coins Ever Move?

The betting markets say it won’t happen. Polymarket prices the odds of any Satoshi wallet moving coins in 2026 at about 9%, with over $2.6 million wagered. Kalshi traders sit at similar levels.

Good thing too, because my honest answer is that it would nuke the entire market. I am talking minus 90%, a crash unlike anything we have ever seen. Three times worse than the Covid crash of March 2020. Eight times worse than the 10/10 liquidation cascade. Every model that treats those coins as burned supply breaks in a single candle, and every bid disappears while the market asks one question: why is a dead man moving?

Funny enough, the coins only flow one way. People keep sending Bitcoin to Satoshi. Someone dropped 2.5 BTC into the genesis wallet earlier this year, and an anonymous sender parked almost 27 BTC there in 2024. Donations, tributes, or taunts, take your pick. The wallets swallow everything and answer nothing.

My Theory: Satoshi Is Dead

Now for the part you actually clicked for.

I played poker professionally for six years before crypto, over five million hands. If that taught me one thing, it is that humans have tells. Nobody sits on a monster stack without touching it. I do not believe for one second that a living person leaves $89 billion untouched for fifteen years. Even if he is some ascetic who never cared about the money, or an altruist waiting to give it all away, there is always a reason to move a fraction. A sick family member. A cause worth funding. A test transaction at 3 a.m. out of pure curiosity. Satoshi never blinked, not through 2013, not at the 2017 top, not in the 2021 blow-off, not past six figures. I bought my first Bitcoin at $44 in 2013, and I have watched every OG who preached holding eventually take some chips off the table. All except one.

There is a darker angle people forget. If Satoshi were alive, he would be the most wanted man on the planet, whether he likes it or not. My guess is the CIA and friends ran a quiet manhunt on him years ago. The NSA stylometry rumors have floated around since the 2010s. You do not invent a currency that challenges the dollar, stack $89 billion in unseizable money, and stay off every intelligence agency’s radar. Either they found a grave, or they found nothing, and both outcomes point the same direction.

The timeline agrees with me. Satoshi’s last known email went out in April 2011, saying he had moved on to other things. Weeks later, cryptographer Len Sassaman died, which is exactly why the Finding Satoshi documentary this year built its case around him and Hal Finney. The New York Times pointed at Adam Back instead, and Back denied it. The internet keeps filling the vacuum with new candidates, including last winter’s Epstein nonsense. If you want the full suspect list, we cover it in our breakdown of who Satoshi Nakamoto really is.

Only two explanations survive fifteen years of silence. Either Satoshi destroyed his keys on purpose, or he died with them. My lean is the second, and probably not long after that 2011 email. The clean exit was no exit at all.

Here is the kicker: for the market, it makes no difference. Dead man or dead keys, those 1.096 million coins are burned supply. Bitcoin’s real cap is closer to 19.9 million than 21 million, and that quiet subtraction makes every other coin scarcer.

Final Words

The numbers are settled science at this point. Satoshi mined about 22,000 early blocks and controls roughly 1.096 million BTC worth $89 billion, more than any ETF, company, or government wallet.

The man behind the numbers is a different story. My take: he is dead, his coins are a permanent donation to Bitcoin’s scarcity, and the day I am proven wrong is the day this market falls 90%.

Until then, the stack keeps doing exactly what it has done since 2010. Nothing. And somehow that nothing underwrites the whole market.

FAQ

How many Bitcoin does Satoshi own?

Satoshi Nakamoto owns an estimated 1.096 million BTC, based on Arkham data and the Patoshi pattern identified by researcher Sergio Demian Lerner. That equals about 5.5% of the circulating supply.

Has Satoshi ever spent any of his Bitcoin?

No. Outside of a few early test transactions from 2009, including the famous send to Hal Finney, the mined coins have stayed untouched for over fifteen years.

What happens to Bitcoin’s price if Satoshi’s coins move?

A crash worse than anything in crypto history. The market treats those coins as permanently locked supply, so any movement breaks that assumption instantly. I would expect a drawdown far beyond the Covid crash or the 10/10 cascade.

Is Satoshi Nakamoto still alive?

Nobody knows for certain. The strongest evidence points against it: total silence since April 2011 and coins that never moved through multiple all-time highs. Candidates like Hal Finney and Len Sassaman both passed away years ago.
