GitHub reveals how its AI workflow using Copilot and Actions transformed accessibility feedback handling, resolving 89% of issues within 90 days.

GitHub has deployed an AI-powered workflow that slashed accessibility issue resolution time from 118 days to 45 days—a 62% improvement that cleared a backlog where nearly half of reported problems had lingered unresolved for over 300 days.

The system, detailed in a March 12, 2026 blog post by Senior Accessibility Program Manager Carie Fisher, combines GitHub Actions, GitHub Copilot, and GitHub Models to automatically triage, classify, and route accessibility feedback to the right engineering teams.

The Numbers Tell the Story

Before the AI workflow, accessibility issues fell through organizational cracks. Unlike typical bugs owned by specific teams, accessibility problems often span navigation, authentication, and shared design components—nobody’s responsibility meant nobody’s priority.

The results since deployment paint a different picture:

  • 89% of issues now close within 90 days, up from 21%
  • 70% reduction in manual administrative time
  • 1,150% increase in issues resolved within 30 days (from 4 to 50 year-over-year)
  • 50% reduction in critical sev1 issues
  • 100% of issues closed within 60 days in the most recent quarter

This builds on GitHub’s broader accessibility push. Since January 2022, the company has resolved over 4,400 accessibility issues as part of debt reduction efforts that began in 2021.

How the System Works

When someone reports an accessibility barrier—90% now flow through GitHub’s community discussion board—a team member creates a tracking issue using a custom template. This triggers a chain reaction.

GitHub Copilot, configured with custom instructions developed by accessibility experts, analyzes the report and automatically populates roughly 80% of the issue’s metadata. That’s over 40 data points including WCAG violation mapping, severity scores, affected user groups, and recommended team assignments.

The AI posts a comment containing a summary, suggested fixes, and a checklist that guides non-expert staff through verification testing. A second Action parses this response, applies labels, updates project boards, and assigns the issue for human review.

What makes the approach adaptable: prompts are stored in markdown files, not baked into model training. Anyone on the team can update the AI’s behavior through a pull request. When standards evolve, so does the system—no retraining pipeline required.

Human Judgment Stays Central

GitHub built explicit checkpoints into the workflow. Submitters must replicate reported problems before issues advance. The accessibility team validates Copilot’s analysis, correcting any misclassifications. When there’s a discrepancy, humans override the AI—and those corrections feed back into prompt refinements.

Issues don’t close until affected users confirm fixes actually work for them. One user’s response captured why this matters: “This fix has actually made my day… Before this I was getting my wife to manage the GitHub issues but now I can actually navigate them by myself.”

Implications for Developer Tools Market

GitHub’s parent company Microsoft trades at $404.88 as of March 11, 2026. The accessibility workflow represents one application of the “continuous AI” methodology GitHub has been developing—a framework that could extend to other types of feedback handling and bug triage across the platform.

For teams maintaining their own repositories, GitHub suggests starting small: create an accessibility issue template, add a copilot-instructions.md file with your standards, and let AI handle formatting while humans focus on fixes.

The company’s next Global Accessibility Awareness Day pledge commits to strengthening accessibility across the open source ecosystem—turning this internal workflow into a model others can replicate.
