GitHub faced 9 service incidents in May 2026 as AI-driven traffic surged. Infrastructure upgrades continue as reliability challenges persist.
GitHub, the Microsoft-owned platform central to global software development, reported nine service incidents in May 2026, according to its latest availability report. The disruptions, ranging from degraded GitHub Actions performance to failures in Copilot services, highlight persistent challenges as the company scales infrastructure to meet surging demand from AI-driven workflows.
The most significant outage occurred on May 4, lasting over an hour, and was triggered by a database schema migration during peak traffic. This caused cascading timeouts and elevated error rates across core services like pull requests, webhooks, and Git operations. Approximately 1.3% of requests returned 5xx errors at peak, disrupting a broad range of customer-facing services. GitHub has since implemented safeguards such as dynamic throttling and automated circuit breakers to prevent similar issues.
Two additional incidents on May 5 and May 6 impacted GitHub Actions, with job failures reaching 17% during one event. These outages were linked to scaling operations and misconfigurations introduced during remediation efforts. Copilot services also faced disruptions, including a network configuration error on May 6 that blocked API access for nearly 40 minutes.
Other notable incidents in the month included a GitHub Actions degradation on May 15, caused by a failover issue, and a May 28 event where errors in an upstream provider’s Responses API disrupted Copilot’s GPT-5.x models. Collectively, these outages underline the growing complexity of maintaining stability as usage intensifies.
GitHub has been under mounting pressure to adapt its infrastructure for AI-driven development. Since October 2025, demand for AI-enhanced workflows like Copilot and Actions has surged, requiring not just a 10x capacity expansion as initially planned, but closer to 30x, according to company leadership. In May, GitHub reported progress in this transformation, with 40% of monolith traffic now served from Azure (up from 8% in February) and key database systems split into isolated services to reduce failure cascades.
Market observers view these challenges as a reflection of AI’s transformative impact on software development. As of June 11, 2026, Microsoft (NASDAQ: MSFT), GitHub’s parent company, trades at $390.34, down 1.85% in the past 24 hours. While GitHub’s reliability issues have been a small drag on sentiment, the broader AI narrative continues to drive tech valuations higher.
