GitHub Launches Stacked Pull Requests for Cleaner Code Reviews

GitHub has introduced a new feature called Stacked Pull Requests, designed to simplify the review process for large code changes. Currently in private preview (as of August 4, 2026), Stacked PRs allow developers to break massive pull requests into smaller, focused layers that can be reviewed and merged independently. This approach not only reduces reviewer fatigue but also accelerates feedback and deployment.

Traditionally, developers have faced a painful trade-off: submit one enormous pull request that’s impossible to review effectively, or manage a series of smaller pull requests manually, often leading to conflicts and logistical headaches. Stacked PRs aim to eliminate this dilemma by introducing structure through dependency chains. Each pull request in a stack builds on the one below it, so reviewers only need to focus on the incremental changes in each layer.

How Stacked Pull Requests Work

GitHub’s workflow organizes a large feature into discrete layers, each scoped to a single concern. For example, a new product search feature might be split into:

These agents can be trained to decompose tasks into stackable layers, handle validations, and even manage rebase conflicts within the stack.
