Fees, Coins and Safety Compared

Robinhood vs Coinbase comes down to one question. Do you want a broker that added crypto, or a crypto exchange that added stocks? Robinhood is cheaper for simple buys and keeps stocks and coins in one app. Coinbase, however, lists far more coins and has the stronger pro trading tier. Both are public US companies, so neither is a reckless pick. Below, we compare fees, coins, staking, safety and each company’s own blockchain.

Quick verdict: Pick Robinhood for cheap, simple buys of major coins next to your stocks. Choose Coinbase for altcoin range, USDC rewards and Advanced Trade.

Robinhood vs Coinbase at a Glance

Robinhood Coinbase
Founded 2013 2012
Listed on Nasdaq (HOOD) Nasdaq (COIN)
Coins 80+ in the US Roughly 350 to 400
Simple buy cost About 0.95% spread About 1% spread plus fees
Pro tier, entry level 0.50% maker, 0.95% taker 0.40% maker, 0.60% taker
Staking cut 25% (US) 35% standard
Own Layer 2 Robinhood Chain Base
Regions US, EEA, UK 100+ countries

Fees: Where Each One Wins

Fees decide most of this comparison, so let’s start there.

Simple buys come first. Robinhood charges no commission and earns on the spread instead. That spread runs close to $0.95 per $100. Coinbase’s Simple interface, by contrast, adds a spread of about 1% plus a transaction fee. As a result, all-in costs there often land between 2% and 4%.

Pro tiers flip the picture. Coinbase Advanced Trade starts at 0.40% maker and 0.60% taker. Robinhood’s exchange routing, meanwhile, starts at 0.50% maker and 0.95% taker. Both ladders fall as your 30-day volume grows.

Here is what a $1,000 market buy costs at the entry tier:

  • Robinhood simple buy: about $9.50
  • Robinhood exchange routing: $9.50 as taker, $5 as maker
  • Coinbase Simple: roughly $20 to $40
  • Coinbase Advanced Trade: $6 as taker, $4 as maker

So the cheapest route is Coinbase Advanced Trade. However, most beginners never open it. For a one-tap buy, Robinhood clearly costs less. Coinbase One also changes the math a little, because members trade fee-free up to a monthly cap. Still, the spread applies on Simple trades.

Coins and Products

Coin range is Coinbase’s clearest edge. It lists roughly 350 to 400 assets, while Robinhood offers 80+ in the US. Therefore, altcoin hunters will hit Robinhood’s ceiling quickly. European Robinhood users get an even shorter list.

Beyond coins, the two apps now overlap more than ever. Robinhood began with stocks, options and futures. Later, it added crypto, prediction markets and its Legend desktop platform. Coinbase, on the other hand, began with crypto and added commission-free US stocks in 2026. It also runs regulated futures, including in 26 European countries.

In short, Robinhood remains the better all-round broker. Coinbase remains the deeper crypto venue. For the full picture on each, read our Robinhood review and our Coinbase review.

Staking and Passive Income

Neither platform is generous here. Robinhood stakes ETH, SOL and ADA, and it keeps 25% of the rewards in the US. Coinbase supports more networks, but its standard cut is 35%. Only Coinbase One members pay a lower commission.

Coinbase does hold one strong card, though. Holding USDC on the platform earns rewards with no lockup. For stablecoin savers, that alone can justify an account. Also, staking on both apps depends on your state or country.

Robinhood Chain vs Base

Both companies run an Ethereum Layer 2, which is rare for listed firms. Base launched first, in 2023, and grew into one of crypto’s busiest chains. Robinhood Chain followed on July 1, 2026, built on Arbitrum technology.

Their goals differ, however. Base hosts general crypto activity, from DeFi to memes. Robinhood Chain, instead, targets tokenized stocks and other real-world assets. Our guide on what Robinhood Chain is explains the design in detail.

Neither chain has a live token today. Because of that, onchain users watch both for possible retroactive rewards. Nothing is promised on either side.

Safety and Track Record

Both companies trade on Nasdaq and publish audited financials every quarter. Neither has lost customer crypto to a hack. Each has suffered a data incident, though.

Robinhood’s 2021 breach exposed emails or names of about 7 million users. Coinbase’s May 2025 leak came from bribed support contractors. It exposed personal data for a subset of customers, but no funds.

Reputation scars exist as well. Robinhood restricted GameStop buying in 2021 and paid a $26 million FINRA fine in 2025. Coinbase, meanwhile, draws steady complaints about account freezes and slow support.

One more point matters. Crypto on either app carries no SIPC or FDIC cover. Therefore, long-term holdings belong in your own wallet. Both platforms let you withdraw coins for a network fee.

Availability

Robinhood serves the US, the European Economic Area and the UK. Coinbase operates in 100+ countries and holds a MiCA license. So outside those three regions, Coinbase is the only option of the two. American readers can see where both rank in our guide to the best crypto exchanges in the USA.

Who Should Pick Which?

Robinhood fits you if:

  • Your stocks already sit there and you want one app
  • Simple orders on major coins cover your needs
  • Tokenized stocks and Robinhood Chain interest you

Coinbase fits you if:

  • A wide altcoin list matters to you
  • Advanced Trade and limit orders are part of your routine
  • USDC rewards or Base are part of your plan
  • Robinhood doesn’t serve your country

Final Words

There is no single winner in Robinhood vs Coinbase. Robinhood wins on simple pricing and on having stocks and crypto under one roof. Coinbase wins on coin range, pro fees and global reach.

For many people, the honest answer is both. Buy majors where you already invest, then use Coinbase Advanced Trade when you need a coin Robinhood lacks. Either way, move long-term holdings to self-custody once the balance grows.
