Bitcoin’s Hard Fork Free Money Is Back

Remember the good old hard forks? Bitcoin Cash, Ethereum Classic, Bitcoin Gold. We were right in the middle of all of them, picking sides, claiming coins, and deciding when to sell. For a couple of years, holding crypto meant waking up to free money every few months. Then the fork era died, and airdrops took over the free money game.

Well, it seems like hard forks might make a comeback. A new Bitcoin fork called ECX will credit nearly every BTC holder with new coins, and the full launch lands on October 31, 2026. Unlike the BIP-110 drama from last weekend, this one actually pays. Here is everything holders need to know, including the dates, the claim process, and the one warning you cannot ignore.

What Is ECX?

ECX is a new blockchain created by Paul Sztorc, the developer behind the Drivechain proposal and BIP-300. If that rings a bell, it should: we listed the eCash Bitcoin hard fork on AirdropAlert when the project first surfaced.

The mechanics are classic fork-airdrop. ECX copies Bitcoin’s full transaction history at a set block height, crediting nearly every Bitcoin holder with an equal amount of ECX. A portion of Satoshi’s coins gets excluded, but everyone else is in. Bitcoin’s own network is not altered in any way. Your BTC stays exactly where it is, and a new asset appears on a parallel chain.

In other words: hold BTC at the snapshot, receive ECX. The kind of deal we built this website on.

The Three Launch Dates

Sztorc originally planned a single launch on August 23, then split the rollout into three stages. Mark these:

  • Alpha: August 23, 2026 at block 963,648
  • Beta: September 20, 2026 at block 967,680
  • Full launch: October 31, 2026 at block 973,728

Coins collected during the alpha and beta phases can later be burned and redeemed for real ECX once the permanent chain goes live. The final date is no accident either. October 31 marks exactly 18 years since Satoshi published the Bitcoin white paper. Launching a fork on Bitcoin’s birthday is the kind of symbolism this industry cannot resist.

Why the staged approach? Sztorc gave several reasons: working through potential software bugs, letting the market discover an early ECX price before mining difficulty locks in, and giving everyone a safety net if something breaks. He summed it up as 12 weeks of practice for holders and exchanges.

Wait, Is This Actually an Airdrop?

Funny you ask. By the strictest definition, the one we enforced like bouncers back in 2017, this is as pure as it gets. Hold coins, receive coins. No tasks, no points, no deposits, no Discord grinding.

We just published the full story of how the crypto airdrop definition stretched from “free tokens for doing nothing” into the points-farming marathon it is today. The timing is almost comical. The same week we declared the original definition dead, ECX shows up to resurrect it. Fork payouts were the OG airdrops, and Bitcoin Cash was one of the first listings we ever published.

Nostalgia aside, one honest caveat applies: nobody knows what ECX will trade for. Bitcoin Cash opened at hundreds of dollars because half the industry backed it. ECX has one respected developer, an experimental design, and zero guaranteed exchange support. Free coins, yes. Valuable coins, to be determined.

How to Claim ECX Safely

The playbook is the same one we wrote in our guide to free cryptocurrency hard forks, and it still applies step for step:

  1. Hold your BTC in self-custody before the snapshot. Your keys, your fork coins. Exchanges may or may not credit customers with ECX, and each one will decide on its own schedule.
  2. Wait for the official ECX wallet software. It handles the split and applies replay protection before any transaction goes through.
  3. Move your BTC to a fresh address after the snapshot, keep the old private key. The old key accesses your ECX, while your Bitcoin sits safely elsewhere.
  4. Don’t rush. The alpha and beta phases exist precisely so everyone can practice. There is no prize for being first, only risk.

The Replay Warning You Cannot Ignore

Here is the part that separates ECX from a normal airdrop claim. Replay protection on ECX is opt-in, not automatic. The official wallet software applies it and warns you before transactions. Outside that software, you are on your own.

Sztorc put it bluntly: “If you ignore us, we will replay your txns.” Translation: if you spend BTC without splitting your coins properly, the ECX chain will mirror that transaction, and your ECX follows your Bitcoin to its new owner.

We broke down exactly how replay attacks work in our BIP-110 explainer last week. Short version: after a chain split, a transaction signed on one chain stays valid on the other, unless protection is added. With ECX, that protection only exists if you use it. Treat every BTC transaction between August 23 and your coin split as one that happens on two chains.

Lessons From the Last Fork Era

We watched this movie from the front row in 2017 and 2018, and a few patterns held every single time.

Claim early, sell into hype. Bitcoin Cash, Bitcoin Gold, and friends all peaked in the early hype window, and fork coins rarely outperformed the original chain long term. Ethereum ran the same playbook from the other side: forks like Constantinople upgraded the chain without splitting it, and the market learned that most contentious splits bleed out.

Expect scam sites. Real claimable coins mean fake claim pages, guaranteed. No legitimate fork will ever ask for your seed phrase on a website. The only safe claim path for ECX runs through the official wallet software. Anything else asking you to “verify your wallet” or “connect to claim ECX” exists to drain you.

Watch what exchanges do. Exchange support decides whether a fork coin gets real liquidity. If major platforms credit ECX to customers, the token gets a market. Silence from exchanges usually means a slow fade.

Final Words

Whatever ECX ends up trading for, this is the most interesting free money event for Bitcoin holders in years. A real developer, a real snapshot, real claimable coins, and a launch date on Bitcoin’s 18th birthday. The old fork era gave many of us our first taste of free crypto, and we would not mind a sequel.

Keep your coins in self-custody before August 23, let the official tooling handle the split, and keep your seed phrase away from anything with “claim” in the URL. We will track all three launch dates and update our listings as the rollout unfolds. See you at the snapshot.

FAQ

What is the ECX airdrop? ECX is a new blockchain by developer Paul Sztorc that copies Bitcoin’s transaction history at a snapshot, crediting nearly every BTC holder with an equal amount of ECX for free.

When is the ECX snapshot? The rollout happens in three stages: alpha on August 23, 2026 (block 963,648), beta on September 20 (block 967,680), and the full launch on October 31 (block 973,728).

How do I claim ECX? Hold BTC in a self-custody wallet through the launch dates, then use the official ECX wallet software to split your coins safely. Alpha and beta coins can later be redeemed for final ECX.

Is ECX safe to claim? The claim itself is safe with the official software. The main risks are replay attacks if you transact carelessly without splitting coins, and fake claim websites phishing for seed phrases.

How much will ECX be worth? Nobody knows. No exchange listings or market support are confirmed yet, and the staged launch exists partly to let the market discover a price before the final release.
