Adam Weitsman: From Scrap Metal to Yuga Labs

Adam Weitsman just landed a seat on the Yuga Labs board of directors. For anyone who lived through the NFT bull market, that name needs no introduction. He is the scrap metal billionaire who bought the Dookey Dash golden key, half of Yuga’s Otherside holdings, and some of the rarest apes in existence.

But who is Adam Weitsman really? Where did his fortune come from, and why does his board appointment matter for BAYC, Otherside, and ApeCoin? Let’s dig in. I’ll also share a few personal stories, because I’ve crossed paths with Adam more than once.

Who Is Adam Weitsman?

Adam Weitsman is an American entrepreneur from Owego, New York, born in 1968. He is the owner and CEO of Upstate Shredding – Weitsman Recycling, one of the largest privately held scrap metal processors on the US East Coast. His net worth is estimated between $1.2 and $1.5 billion.

Outside the scrap yards, Weitsman is known for two things. First, his philanthropy across upstate New York. Second, his status as one of the most aggressive NFT collectors the space has ever seen.

On July 15, 2026, Yuga Labs announced that Weitsman officially joined its board of directors. Notably, he stated he won’t take any compensation for the role.

Weitsman’s background is more colorful than your average billionaire’s. His family has been in the scrap business since 1938, when his grandfather Ben founded Ben Weitsman & Son. Young Adam, however, initially went a different direction.

He moved to New York City and worked in the Manhattan art world. By age 23, he had opened his own American folk art gallery in Greenwich Village. Collecting was in his blood long before NFTs existed. He even built one of the most notable American stoneware collections in the country.

Tragedy pulled him back home. After losing his sister to cancer in the early 1990s, Weitsman returned to Owego and joined the family scrap business. In 1997, he founded Upstate Shredding on a 17-acre site in the Tioga County Industrial Park.

His path wasn’t without setbacks. In 2004, Weitsman was convicted of check kiting, paid a $1 million fine, and served eight months in prison. Rather than hiding from it, he rebuilt. He acquired the family business from his father in 2005 and expanded relentlessly. Today the company operates 15 locations across New York and Pennsylvania, and won Scrap Company of the Year multiple times.

A kid from a scrap yard who conquered the art world, lost everything to a felony conviction, then came back to build a billion-dollar empire. You can see why the NFT community embraced him.

The Dookey Dash Golden Key That Started the Frenzy

Weitsman’s big NFT moment came in February 2023 with Dookey Dash, Yuga Labs’ infamous skill-based sewer runner. BAYC and MAYC holders received free Sewer Passes to compete, and over 25,000 players grinded for the top score. Fortnite pro Kyle “Mongraal” Jackson won the one-of-one golden key.

Mongraal initially listed the key for 2,222 ETH, roughly $3.6 million at the time. After rejecting bids from UPDAO and 9GAG’s Memeland, he sold it to Adam Weitsman for 1,000 ETH, around $1.6 million.

That single purchase flipped the play-to-earn narrative on its head. Suddenly, gaming skill had a seven-figure price tag attached to it. Everyone went crazy over it.

I played Dookey Dash myself and ranked top 100 on one of my accounts. The reward was a rare NFT that traded around 20 ETH at the peak. Not bad for playing a video game. Unfortunately, I never sold it, and today it’s worth less than 1 ETH. Lessons learned: rewards from hype games are for selling, not holding.

Building One of the Biggest NFT Collections in the Space

The golden key was only the beginning. Weitsman went on a collecting spree that made him one of the most watched wallets in Web3.

He bought a Bored Ape, then kept going. His HV-MTL bags grew so large that he eventually acquired the collection from Yuga Labs outright. Otherdeeds followed, often purchased directly from Yuga in over-the-counter deals. In August 2025, he bought 5,000 Otherside NFTs straight from Yuga Labs, which was half of the company’s own holdings. The deal pushed the Otherside floor price to a one-month high.

His buying didn’t stop at Yuga ecosystems either. Weitsman announced plans to purchase 200 Moonbirds and scooped up rare Pudgy Penguins, including a coveted Pengu Prince. While most collectors rotated out during the bear market, he kept accumulating grails.

My Gold Ape Story With Adam Weitsman

Here’s a personal one. For about a year, I held a gold fur Bored Ape, one of the rarest traits in the collection. Naturally, I slid into Adam’s Instagram DMs hoping he’d buy it. We chatted several times, and he showed genuine interest, but he never pulled the trigger.

When I visited NFT NYC, he wasn’t attending the event himself. Instead, he offered to let me take his Bugatti for a ride. I was event-hopping with friends, so I passed on it. Looking back, that offer says everything about what BAYC membership used to unlock. The NFTs were the tickets, but the community and connections were the real product.

He never bought my gold ape in the end. Two years later, though, he found another gold ape and finally added one to his collection. Some collectors never let a grail go.

Joining the Yuga Labs Board of Directors

On July 15, 2026, Yuga Labs CEO Michael Figge announced Weitsman’s appointment to the board. Figge framed it as putting the right people in the right seats while building toward the next cycle, calling Weitsman one of the most impactful collectors in the space.

Weitsman’s own statement made his motivation clear. He said he took the position because he believes in the potential of Yuga, Figge, and the entire Web3 ecosystem. He also confirmed he won’t receive any compensation for the role.

Think about what that means. The company’s biggest customer now has a seat at the table. Weitsman holds half of Yuga’s former Otherside supply, the golden key, the HV-MTL collection, and a stack of apes. Nobody on earth is more financially aligned with Yuga Labs succeeding.

What This Means for BAYC, Otherside, and ApeCoin

Yuga Labs is doubling down on three core pillars: the Bored Ape Yacht Club, Otherside, and ApeCoin. The board appointment signals a strategy shift toward collector-led governance rather than pure venture capital oversight.

For holders, the read is simple. A billionaire with skin in the game now helps steer the ship, and he’s doing it for free. Whether that translates into an Otherside revival or renewed BAYC momentum remains to be seen. Still, in a market starved for conviction, Weitsman’s move is one of the strongest signals Yuga has produced in years.

Final Words

So, who is Adam Weitsman? He’s a scrap metal billionaire, a lifelong collector, a comeback story, and now a Yuga Labs board member. From folk art galleries in Greenwich Village to the Dookey Dash golden key, his instinct has always been the same: buy the rarest thing in the room and hold it.

His appointment won’t single-handedly bring back the 2021 NFT mania. However, it puts one of the most committed believers in Web3 directly inside the company that defined the last NFT cycle. That’s worth watching.
