Why ZEC Dropped 10% and My Long

By WebDeskNovember 3, 20269 Mins Read

The Zcash grants dispute knocked ZEC down about 10% overnight, to a low near $1,128, while Bitcoin barely moved. Two things hit at once. A fight over who controls the Zcash Community Grants pool, worth roughly 91,500 ZEC, boiled over on X and the Zcash forum. At the same time, a whale got liquidated on a leveraged long when price lost $1,200. All of this lands two days before the NU7 upgrade. I bought the dip with a long from $1,200, and in this post I explain the dispute, the chart, the midterms backdrop and how I’m managing the trade.

What the Zcash Grants Dispute Is About

Zcash Community Grants (ZCG) is a five-person committee. It receives 8% of every new block reward automatically and hands that money out to ecosystem projects. After this year’s run, that pool has grown to around 91,500 ZEC. At current prices, that is more than $100 million controlled by five people, with no coinholder vote on how it gets spent.

Big holders noticed. Tyler Winklevoss questioned whether the committee is fit to manage that much money and compared the setup to taxation without representation. Naval Ravikant backed a $50 million cap on grants. Helius co-founder Mert Mumtaz called ZCG’s first response nowhere near good enough.

The committee did move. On October 30, it proposed sending 36,200 ZEC to the new Network Sustainability Mechanism (NSM), which pays miners over time, and giving up about 62,000 ZEC of future allocations. Critics saw a catch, though. The 8% stream is already scheduled to end in 2028, and the compromise would extend a reduced version to 2032.

Then the founders weighed in. Zooko Wilcox and cryptographer Sean Bowe lined up behind one proposal: ZCG stops collecting block rewards entirely and moves 50,000 ZEC into a reserve for miners. Zooko openly called it a governance crisis and asked rival proposals to withdraw. Nothing is decided yet. ZCG is expected to file a formal proposal, and the forum is still arguing.

Why This Hit the Price

Governance drama alone rarely moves a top-10 coin 10% in a night. The sell-off came from two holders, one real and one announced.

The announced one goes by “big z”, a pseudonymous large holder. Over the weekend, he posted on X that he would sell his entire ZEC position. His reasoning: the pool should fund cryptography, not programs he considers political. Nobody has tied his claim to an address, so treat the sale as a statement rather than a confirmed flow.

The real one is on-chain. One address spent about $31.8 million over four days buying 25,002 ZEC at an average of $1,271. The same party also opened an 18,910 ZEC long on Hyperliquid at $1,378. When price slipped below $1,200 early Tuesday, that long was fully liquidated, for a loss of about $2.58 million on the futures leg alone. Forced selling of nearly 19,000 ZEC into a thin Asian session is exactly how you get a wick to $1,128.

In other words, a governance scare created the move, and leverage turned it into a crash.

NU7 Lands This Week

The timing is awkward because NU7, Zcash’s biggest upgrade of the year, activates at block 3,543,405. Developers targeted November 5. Based on the block pace this morning, activation looks more like the early hours of November 6. Our Zcash NU7 guide covers the details, but the short version is this:

  • Block time drops from 75 seconds to 25 seconds.
  • Version 4 transactions stop being valid, which affects old Sprout balances.
  • The NSM goes live, so future miner rewards get smoothed.

If you still hold coins in a Sprout address from the 2016 to 2018 era, move them before the block. Our Zcash wallets guide lists wallets that support the current shielded pools. Zcash issuance per day does not change, so there is no supply shock here, only an upgrade risk window where exchanges may pause deposits briefly.

ZEC Chart: Levels I’m Watching

Zoom out first. ZEC is still up more than 200% over the past year, and the daily structure since the summer is a range between roughly $1,100 and $1,320. Monday’s drop took price from the top of that range to the bottom in one session. However, it did not break it.

Support sits in three layers:

  • $1,128, the overnight low.
  • $1,100, the round number and the range floor. The 100-day EMA is rising toward this zone as well.
  • $1,036, the 100-day EMA itself as of late October. If that goes, the structure is broken and I step aside.

Resistance comes at $1,200 first. That is where the stop-losses were triggered, so reclaiming it on a daily close removes the liquidation overhang. Above that, $1,238 to $1,279 is the pre-drop zone, then $1,320 caps the range. A daily close above $1,320 opens the door to a retest of the $1,595 high from September.

As I write, ZEC trades around $1,196, right at that first battle line.

The Midterms Backdrop

Today is election day in the US. Polls close from 6 PM ET, and the first results land late in the US evening, deep in the Asian session for crypto. Historically, Bitcoin chops into the midterms and rallies in the year after. I laid out the pattern and the Polymarket odds in my midterms and Bitcoin post yesterday, so I won’t repeat it here.

What matters for ZEC is simpler. Bitcoin sits near $77,300, flat on the day, and ETF outflows continue. So the broad market is not helping, but it is not hurting either. ZEC’s drop was its own problem. If the election removes some uncertainty and tech bounces, high-beta coins like ZEC usually bounce harder. If the result drags or markets sell the news, my stop handles it.

My ZEC Long

Here is the trade, as always with my own money.

  • Long ZEC from $1,200.
  • Stop loss at $1,089, below the round number and the range floor.
  • No take-profit set yet.

Why no TP1? Because I want to see how price behaves around $1,200 first. If it reclaims the level cleanly and holds through the US session, TP1 goes near the pre-drop zone at $1,238 to $1,279, and the stop moves to entry once it fills. If price keeps stalling under $1,200, I’ll tighten rather than hope. My rule hasn’t changed: TP1 exists to make the trade risk-free, not to bank a big win.

The liquidated whale is the lesson here. Buying $31.8 million of spot is a conviction bet. Adding 18,910 ZEC of leverage on top at $1,378 is a timing bet. One bad night turned a long-term thesis into a forced sale.

That is also why my ZEC spot stack is a different book. I’ve been DCAing ZEC twice a week since August, spot only, and those buys ran through last night like any other day. The trade above is sized as a trade. The spot bag is sized to hold until the privacy cycle plays out. Mixing the two is how people get liquidated out of coins they actually believe in. New to ZEC? Start with our first-time Zcash buying guide and the explainer on why Zcash leads the privacy coins.

Other Positions Right Now

Nothing else changed much. I’m still long ETH from the Binance hack bounce setup, with the stop at $2,230, plus long SOL and long TRX. Details are in the ETH bounce trading post. On the TradFi side, I’m long Google and long silver into the election. Both are smaller positions with tight stops, and I’ll cover them properly once the results are in.

Final Words

The Zcash grants dispute is a real governance problem, but it is a problem about $100 million of grants, not about the protocol. Zooko and Sean Bowe backing a plan to end the 8% stream is the kind of response holders asked for. Meanwhile, a leveraged whale turned the scare into a 10% candle. I’m long from $1,200 with a stop at $1,089, no TP yet, and I’ll update this post once price picks a side and once NU7 is live. If you want these updates as they happen, the trading newsletter is where they go first.

FAQ

Why did Zcash drop today?

ZEC fell about 10% after a dispute over the Zcash Community Grants pool escalated, a large holder announced he would sell, and a whale’s 18,910 ZEC long on Hyperliquid was liquidated below $1,200.

What is the Zcash grants dispute?

Zcash Community Grants receives 8% of block rewards and holds around 91,500 ZEC. Large holders object that five committee members control more than $100 million without a coinholder vote. Zooko Wilcox and Sean Bowe now back a plan to end the 8% stream and move 50,000 ZEC to a miner reserve.

Did “big z” actually sell his ZEC?

He announced a full sale on X. No address has been linked to him, so the sale is unconfirmed on-chain.

When does Zcash NU7 activate?

At block 3,543,405. Developers targeted November 5, but the current block pace points to the early hours of November 6.

What are the key ZEC support levels?

$1,128 is the overnight low, $1,100 is the range floor, and the 100-day EMA sits around $1,036. Resistance is $1,200, then $1,238 to $1,279, then $1,320.
