Key Takeaways

  • XRP investors face fake airdrops, wallet scans, and phishing scams.
  • XRP Ledger Foundation warns against false reward campaigns.
  • RippleX flags fake scanners and impersonation posts on X.

XRP Ledger Foundation Warns Investors About Fake Rewards

The XRP Ledger Foundation, a nonprofit organization supporting the growth and development of the XRP Ledger, warned investors on Aug. 6 that fraudulent XRP reward campaigns are spreading through social media as scammers use fake promotions, impersonation accounts, and direct messages to appear legitimate. The organization urged the community to carefully review announcements involving airdrops, giveaways, or wallet activity before taking action.

The warning followed a wave of social media posts designed to imitate legitimate XRP organizations and push investors toward private conversations, external websites, or unauthorized services that can expose digital assets. Similar XRP giveaway campaigns have previously targeted users, with Ripple CTO Emeritus David Schwartz warning XRP users to stay safe from giveaway scams.

“Beware of scammers targeting the XRP community! There are no XRP airdrops or rewards given out by us, Ripple or wallets in the community,” the Foundation stated, adding:

“Don’t share your XRP wallet keys. None of us will DM or engage with you directly. Keep your guard up and stay vigilant.”

RippleX Warns Against Fake XRP Rewards Scanner and Wallet Traps

RippleX, Ripple’s developer-focused division supporting XRP Ledger technology and ecosystem development, issued a security public service announcement, or PSA, on X on Aug. 6, warning investors about phishing attempts and fake giveaway posts appearing across the platform.

The alert focused on a fake “XRP Rewards Scanner” promoted through fabricated screenshots and false claims that investors could recover unclaimed XRP by scanning their wallets. The scheme attempted to make a fraudulent service appear legitimate by using familiar XRP branding and misleading claims.

“Ripple is not running an ‘XRP Rewards Scanner’ or offering unclaimed XRP through a wallet scan. Screenshots claiming otherwise are fake,” the group stated on X, advising:

“Always verify posts through official channels before clicking a link or connecting a wallet. Never share your secret key or recovery phrase. Review every transaction before signing.”

The latest warning follows earlier XRP scam campaigns that used trusted-looking platforms to target investors. In July 2025, Ripple warned XRP traders about hijacked YouTube channels that were redesigned to resemble official accounts and promote fraudulent XRP content.

In December 2024, Ripple also cautioned the XRP community about fake giveaways during a period of increased market attention as XRP became the third-largest cryptocurrency by market capitalization. The campaigns attempted to exploit interest around the asset’s price growth.

Government Agencies Warn Crypto Users About Fraud Schemes

The XRP warnings align with broader concerns from U.S. agencies over cryptocurrency fraud involving impersonation, fake investment opportunities, and attempts to gain access to digital wallets.

The Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) advises cryptocurrency investors to verify investment opportunities independently and avoid sending digital assets to unknown individuals or platforms. The agency has identified cryptocurrency investment fraud as a growing threat involving deceptive platforms, social engineering, and fraudulent schemes.

The Federal Trade Commission (FTC) has also warned consumers about cryptocurrency scams involving fake offers, impersonation, and fraudulent payment requests. The agency recommends researching opportunities carefully and avoiding communications that create pressure to act quickly.

The U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) has highlighted tactics used by fraudsters targeting crypto investors, including fake endorsements, misleading promotions, and fraudulent websites designed to create confidence among victims.

Security Practices Help Protect XRP Investments

Investors can reduce exposure to phishing campaigns by protecting private keys, reviewing transactions carefully, and avoiding suspicious links before connecting wallets to online services. Fake rewards, airdrops, and wallet verification requests are common tactics used to create urgency and trick investors into giving up control of their assets.

Understanding how to identify cryptocurrency fraud schemes can help investors recognize phishing attempts, fake websites, impersonation campaigns, and deceptive reward offers before connecting wallets, approving transactions, or sharing sensitive information.
