Character.AI debuts c.ai Books, letting users roleplay inside classic novels like Pride and Prejudice and Dracula through AI-powered interactive storytelling.
Character.AI is betting that the future of reading looks a lot more like gaming. The AI chatbot company launched c.ai Books on April 16, a new platform that transforms public domain classics into interactive experiences where users roleplay as characters within the narrative.
The product debuts with over 20 titles including Alice in Wonderland, Pride and Prejudice, Dracula, Frankenstein, Romeo and Juliet, and The Great Gatsby—all sourced from Project Gutenberg’s public domain library.
How It Works
Users select a book, choose to play as an existing character or import their own c.ai Persona, then interact with the story in real time. Two modes are available at launch: “Book arc mode” follows the original plot while incorporating user choices, while “Go off script mode” enables freeform roleplay within the story’s world.
A third option called TapTale is coming soon, offering pre-written prompts for users who want guidance alongside the option to type freely.
The feature sits within c.ai Labs, Character.AI’s experimental product division. Free users get limited turns to sample the experience, while c.ai+ subscribers receive expanded access to the full library.
The Remix Angle
Perhaps more interesting than the base experience is the Alternate Universe system. Users can completely reimagine a book’s premise—setting Alice in Wonderland in outer space, turning it into a romantic comedy, whatever. These community-created remixes become browsable and playable by other users, essentially crowdsourcing infinite variations on classic texts.
Character.AI is framing this as a gateway drug for literature rather than a replacement. The pitch: interact with characters from a classic, develop interest, then pick up the actual book. Whether that conversion actually happens or users simply prefer the interactive version remains to be seen.
Market Positioning
The launch represents Character.AI’s continued push into entertainment applications beyond its core chatbot product. By targeting public domain works, the company sidesteps licensing headaches while tapping into recognizable IP that spans generations.
For the broader AI entertainment space, c.ai Books tests whether interactive storytelling can work with structured narratives rather than purely open-ended chat. The company is accepting user requests for additional titles, suggesting this is a long-term product bet rather than a one-off experiment.
