  • Bee Maps uses a decentralized mapping platform powered by the Solana blockchain, with contributors earning HONEY tokens for verified spatial data.
  • It gathers street-level imagery via dashcams and stores it on Solana’s blockchain for transparency and is accessible via APIs for uses ranging from logistics to curbside management.

Self-driving Volkswagen unit ADMT is partnering with Bee Maps to incorporate street data in its Robotaxi systems in real-time. Bee Maps operates on a decentralized mapping platform by Hivemapper, powered by the Solana blockchain, which enables the gathering and distribution of spatial records worldwide. The platform harnesses blockchain technology to provide spatial data.

Inside Volkswagen’s Solana Blockchain-Powered Partnership

The partnership aims to provide the self-driving iD.Buzz cars at Volkswagen with real-time environmental information that will allow the cars to navigate the varied obstacles in urban settings, without being forced to use the sensors. Bee Maps gathers road-level images using its drivers who install special Bee dash cameras.

These dash cameras would record videos, which would be further assessed with machine learning algorithms to identify aspects like construction regions, traffic signs, and lane lines. Contributors to the network are compensated in HONEY tokens for each verified data segment, enabling a continuous stream of updated map content.

The data obtained after processing is stored on the Solana blockchain, leading to transparent and secure monitoring of donations and their use. Bee Maps asserts that the model is a more dynamic and up-to-date mapping solution in comparison with traditional systems that were based on fixed vehicle fleets.

The collected data are shared via APIs, and they can serve an extensive range of use cases. These include curbside management, car tracking, and route planning of logistics and mobility companies. Volkswagen is the latest to utilize this mapping technology, following recent trials by ride-hailing company Lyft to optimize passenger drop-off zones.

Other Advantages For Volkswagen’s ADMT

As of now, Volkswagen’s ADMT is driving about 30 autonomous ID.Buzz electric minivans around Hamburg and intends to adopt in Los Angeles as a driverless mobility pilot program involving Uber, which is projected to grow in size by 2026. Individual vehicles of the program are fitted with a total of 13 cameras and 9 lidar pulsators, and create approximately five gigabytes of data each second.

Nonetheless, external mapping data is of vital importance in weather-prone or construction-intensive regions where sensor performance can deteriorate. The geographic and traffic data provided by Bee Maps will be fed directly into ADMT perception systems. Thus, the testing teams will be able to verify the logical routes and other vehicle operations (like pickups and emergency configuration) directly on these perception systems without being forced to deploy survey teams.

Meanwhile, a source familiar with the matter said that the data transfer is all offboard. Hence, it doesn’t require additional regulatory oversight. For further context, Bee Maps typically charges for data usage based on consumption metrics. However, specific pricing details related to the Volkswagen agreement were not made public.
