Mistral introduces Devstral 2 and Vibe CLI, offering state-of-the-art open-source coding models and terminal AI, enhancing code automation and efficiency.
Mistral has unveiled its latest advancements in open-source coding models with the release of Devstral 2 and Mistral Vibe CLI. These innovations aim to streamline code automation and efficiency for developers across various platforms.
Devstral 2: A Leap in Coding Models
The Devstral 2 series includes two models: Devstral 2 (123B) and Devstral Small 2 (24B), both designed to deliver high-performance coding capabilities. As reported by Mistral.ai, these models are open-source, with Devstral 2 utilizing a modified MIT license and Devstral Small 2 under Apache 2.0. They are engineered to support distributed intelligence with high cost-efficiency.
Devstral 2 achieves a 72.2% score on the SWE-bench Verified, showcasing its prowess despite having fewer parameters than its competitors. It is available for free via Mistral’s API, providing an accessible solution for developers.
Mistral Vibe CLI: Enhancing Code Automation
The Mistral Vibe CLI is a command-line interface designed to enhance code automation by integrating with Devstral models. It offers features such as project-aware context, smart references, and multi-file orchestration, allowing developers to manage their codebases efficiently. Released under Apache 2.0, it is compatible with popular IDEs, providing a seamless coding experience.
Performance and Deployment
Devstral models are optimized for both on-premises and cloud deployments, supporting fine-tuning and integration with various systems. The models’ compact sizes enable them to outperform larger competitors like DeepSeek V3.2 and Kimi K2, making them ideal for environments with limited resources.
In human evaluations, Devstral 2 demonstrated a significant advantage over its counterparts, although it still trails behind some closed-source models like Claude Sonnet 4.5. Nevertheless, its contribution to the open-source ecosystem is notable, offering robust performance at scale.
Getting Started
Currently, Devstral 2 is offered free through the Mistral API, with planned pricing of $0.40/$2.00 per million tokens for Devstral 2 and $0.10/$0.30 for Devstral Small 2. The Vibe CLI is available as an extension in popular IDEs, facilitating easy integration into existing workflows.
For deployment, Devstral 2 requires a minimum of four H100-class GPUs, while Devstral Small 2 is designed for single-GPU operations, supporting a range of NVIDIA systems.
