The brainchild of Alycea Adams from the University of North Carolina – Chapel Hill and Matt Steele from Georgia Institute of Technology, HairMatch aims to tackle the universal challenge of hair management. Leveraging OpenAI GPT-4 technology on Azure AI Foundry, HairMatch scans and analyzes hair types and porosity, providing personalized product recommendations and styling guides. This innovative app has already reached users in 45 countries, offering a solution to the frustration of bad hair days.
Adams, who struggled with her natural hair growing up, initially proposed the idea to Steele in jest. However, it quickly evolved into a viable project, highlighting the potential of AI in the natural hair care industry. The app not only addresses a common problem but also serves as an inspiration for young Black and African American women in tech, showcasing the importance of representation in the field.
Signvrse and Argus: Diverse Applications of AI
While HairMatch focuses on hair care, the Imagine Cup also features Signvrse and Argus, each utilizing AI to solve different issues. Signvrse is dedicated to enhancing communication for the hearing impaired by developing tools that translate sign language into text and speech, thereby bridging communication gaps.
