How I Sell an Airdrop (2026)

An airdrop exit strategy is the plan for when and how you sell the tokens you farmed. You decide it before the claim, not after. Mine comes down to a few rules: trim in the pre-market if the bag gets big, sell most at TGE, keep a small runner and treat staking and vesting as separate decisions. When I cannot sell, I short the token instead and sit neutral until I can.

Farming is only half the job. Plenty of people grind for a year, collect a great allocation and then watch it melt. In fact, my point farming strategy post ended with one line about trimming early. Readers asked for the full playbook, so here it is.

Why You Need an Exit Plan Before the Claim

Most airdropped tokens go down after launch. Our own tracking puts the number close to nine out of ten, and I explained the mechanics in why airdropped tokens dump. Free supply meets optional demand, and the chart resolves downward.

That base rate changes how you should think. Holding is not the neutral choice. Holding is a bet that this token belongs to the small minority that grows into its valuation. Sometimes it does. Usually it doesn’t.

So I make the decision while my head is clear. The claim page is the worst place to plan an exit. Prices are moving, Discord is screaming and every chart looks like it goes up forever. Therefore I write the plan days or weeks before the TGE and simply execute it.

Step 1: Trim in the Pre-Market When the Bag Gets Big

Before the token exists, there is often a price for it. Exchange pre-markets, pre-launch futures and points marketplaces all show what the market thinks your allocation is worth. I covered the three types in crypto pre-market trading.

Here is my rule. If the pre-market value of my expected allocation becomes a meaningful position, I trim. Not everything, just enough that a bad launch cannot hurt me. A hedge works the same way: short the pre-launch perp against my expected tokens and lock the value in.

Why act this early? Because pre-market prices run hot. They reflect peak attention and thin supply. Later, at launch, the real float arrives and the price usually comes down. Locking some value before that moment has paid me well over the years.

Of course, you need a number to trim against. Our guide on how airdrop allocations are calculated helps you estimate it. Pair that with your points and you get a rough position size.

One warning. Pre-market spreads are wide and settlement rules vary. Small bags are not worth the hassle. Only trim when the position is large enough that the fees do not matter.

Step 2: Sell the Majority at TGE

Launch day is where most of the money gets made or lost. My default is simple. I sell the majority of the allocation within the first hours, usually in two or three tranches.

Tranches matter because launch prices are chaotic. The first candle can print the high of the month, or the token can spike an hour later. Nobody knows. Selling in pieces means I never sell everything at the worst print. Similarly, I never hold everything hoping for a better one.

A typical split for me looks like this. The first tranche goes at the open, no matter what. A second tranche goes on the first strong push, if one comes. The third goes before the end of day one. After that, only the runner remains.

Does this mean I miss the occasional monster? Yes. Hyperliquid went up for months after launch, and selling most of it early cost people who followed this plan. However, it was one token in a long list of launches that went the other way. The plan wins over a hundred airdrops, not one.

This is also where my take profit strategy from the trading series applies. An airdrop is a position with a cost basis of zero. Treat it like a trade that is already deep in profit, and the selling gets easier.

Step 3: Keep a Runner, but Size It Honestly

A runner is the slice you keep for the outlier outcome. For me it sits around ten percent of the original bag. That number is small enough that a full dump does not sting. At the same time, it is big enough to matter if the token does a Hyperliquid.

The runner has rules too. First, I set a mental invalidation. If the token loses most of its value and nothing has changed, I usually let it ride to zero rather than selling dust. Second, I never add to a runner with fresh capital. That turns a free position into a real one, and it changes my emotions around it.

Pick runners by fundamentals, not by vibes. Real revenue, a sensible launch valuation and buybacks or fee sharing are the traits that winners share. A token with none of those gets a smaller runner, or none at all.

Step 4: Decide on Staking Separately

Many projects offer staking right after TGE. Sometimes it comes with a bonus allocation, a second season or governance power. The trap is treating this as a free upgrade. It is not. Staking means lockups, and lockups mean you cannot execute your exit plan.

So I ask one question. Would I buy this token today to stake it? If the answer is no, I do not stake the airdrop either. The zero cost basis does not change the math. Locked tokens that drop in value are still a loss of money you could have had.

That said, staking can be a great trade in two cases. One, when the staking reward is itself a likely airdrop, which I explained in staking and restaking airdrops. Two, when the lockup is short and the yield is high enough to pay for the risk. Even then, I only stake the runner. The majority still gets sold.

Step 5: Sell Vesting Tranches as They Unlock

Some airdrops do not hand you everything at once. You receive a portion at TGE, and the rest unlocks over weeks or months. I covered cliffs and unlock schedules in what is token vesting.

Vesting changes the plan in one way. Every unlock is a fresh TGE for that slice. I apply the same rule each time: sell most, keep a little. Waiting for a “better price” across all unlocks is how people end up holding a token at a tenth of launch price.

Locked tokens are not helpless, though. If the token has a perp market, I short the size of my locked portion and hold that short until the unlock. The hedge freezes the value of the locked bag, whatever the price does. Then, on unlock day, I sell the tokens and close the short in the same session. Funding costs money while the hedge is open, so I only do it on bags large enough to justify the fees. You will find the perp venues I use in best perp DEX.

There is one extra wrinkle. Other people have vesting schedules too. Team and investor unlocks sit in the same calendar, and large holders sell ahead of them. Therefore I check the unlock calendar before my own tranches and front-run the obvious dates where I can.

The Mistakes I Still See Every Launch

A few patterns repeat on every big airdrop, and they all come from skipping the plan.

Holding by default. People do not decide to hold. They simply fail to decide to sell, and the chart decides for them. Chasing after selling. Someone sells at the open, watches a spike and buys back higher. Now they are exit liquidity for the farmers who waited. Forgetting taxes. In many countries, the claim itself is a taxable event, which our airdrop taxes guide covers in detail.

Each one is fixable with a written plan. Decide the tranches, the runner size and the staking answer before the snapshot. After that, your only job is to follow it.

Keep This Content Free

Exit plans need a good place to execute, and that is where you can help the site at no cost. If you sign up through our OKX or Bybit links, you get a fee discount and we earn a small commission. That keeps our guides free and our listings running.

Final Words

My airdrop exit strategy has not changed much in years. Trim in the pre-market when the bag gets big. Sell the majority at TGE, in tranches. Keep a small runner for the outliers. Stake only what you would buy, and sell vesting unlocks the same way you sold the first batch. Whenever a bag is locked, short it and wait.

None of that is clever. It is simply a plan written before the emotions arrive. Farmers who last across cycles are rarely the ones who caught the one token that kept going. More often, they are the ones who stopped giving their gains back.

Which is better to sell your Airdrops? Bybit or OKX?

FAQ

Should I sell an airdrop immediately?
Selling most of it at TGE is the statistically sound default, since most airdropped tokens decline after launch. Keep a small runner if the project has real revenue and a sensible valuation.

What is a good airdrop exit strategy?
Trim in the pre-market when the position gets large, sell the majority at launch in two or three tranches, keep around ten percent as a runner, and sell vesting unlocks the same way.

Should I stake my airdrop tokens?
Only if you would buy the token to stake it today. Lockups stop you from executing your exit plan, so stake the runner at most unless the staking reward is itself a likely airdrop.

Can I sell an airdrop before it launches?
Often, yes. Exchange pre-markets, pre-launch futures and points marketplaces let you sell or hedge an expected allocation. Spreads are wide, so it mainly makes sense for larger bags.

How do I hedge locked airdrop tokens?
Short the same amount on a perp market and hold the short until the unlock. The value of the locked bag stays fixed, and you close both sides on unlock day.

What is a runner in airdrop farming?
A runner is the small portion of an airdrop you keep after selling the majority. It gives you upside if the token becomes an outlier without risking much if it dumps.
