How It Works and How to Spot One (2026)

A crypto pump and dump is a scheme where a group buys a token cheaply, inflates the price with coordinated hype, and then sells to the buyers they attracted. Once the organizers exit, the price collapses. Late buyers absorb the losses.

The trick is far older than crypto. Stock promoters ran it a century ago. However, thin liquidity and anonymous wallets make meme coins the perfect playground. You can find the short definition in our meme coin glossary, and the full picture below.

How a Pump and Dump Works

Every scheme moves through three phases.

Accumulation. The organizers buy quietly while the price is low. They prefer small coins, because little money moves them a lot.

The pump. Next, the promotion starts. Posts, calls and raids hit at the same time. Meanwhile, the organizers may trade between their own wallets to fake volume. New buyers see a rising chart and pile in.

The dump. At the peak, the organizers sell everything. Demand cannot absorb that supply, so the price falls fast. Within hours, the coin often sits below where it started.

Who Runs Them

Several types of players organize pumps.

Pump groups are the most open about it. They gather members on Telegram or Discord and announce a coin at a set time. Members think they are insiders. In reality, the admins bought earlier and sell to their own followers.

Paid promoters are a second source. A team or whale pays accounts to post about a coin without disclosure. Influencer calls move markets, which is why our top meme coin KOLs list tells you to follow the attention, not the trade.

Large holders can also act alone. On a small coin, one whale with a few friendly accounts is enough.

Pump and Dump vs Rug Pull

People often treat these as the same thing. They are not, although the overlap is big.

A rug pull is about who exits. The team drains the liquidity or dumps its supply, and the project dies. Our crypto rug pull guide covers the types.

A pump and dump, by contrast, is about how the price moves. Any group can run one, even on a coin whose dev did nothing wrong. Afterwards, the token usually keeps trading at a lower price.

Of course, both can happen together. A dev can pump their own coin and then pull the liquidity. Equally, a slow rug involves no pump at all.

Warning Signs

Pumps leave a recognizable trail:

  • Volume explodes on a small coin with no real news.
  • Dozens of accounts post the same ticker within minutes.
  • A group announces a countdown to a “signal.”
  • Wallets linked to the promoters bought before the posts.
  • The chart goes vertical, then prints long upper wicks.
  • Everyone urges you to buy now and never mentions selling.

The wallet check matters most. If early buyers loaded up right before the hype, you know the plan. My memecoin due diligence checklist shows how to read that.

Is a Pump and Dump Illegal?

In regulated stock markets, it clearly is. Crypto is less settled, and the rules differ by country. Still, regulators in several countries have charged crypto promoters over these schemes.

Practically, do not count on the law to save you. Most organizers are anonymous, and losses are rarely recovered.

What to Do if You Are in One

First, do not chase. A vertical candle is the worst place to enter.

If you already hold and sit in profit, take it. The group may call you a jeet for selling, and our post on what a jeet is in crypto explains that pressure. In a pump, however, the sellers are the ones who keep their money.

If you are underwater, decide with a clear head. Holding and hoping for a second pump rarely works.

Keep This Content Free

Pump groups charge for “VIP signals,” while this breakdown costs nothing. You can support it by signing up through our OKX or Bybit links. It adds no cost for you and helps fund the site.

Final Words

A crypto pump and dump needs two things, cheap supply and late buyers. The organizers bring the first, and the hype recruits the second. So the defense is simple in theory. Check who bought before the noise, distrust countdowns and never buy a vertical chart. In practice, FOMO makes that hard. That is exactly why knowing the pattern in advance helps.

FAQ

What is a crypto pump and dump? It is a scheme where a group buys a token cheaply, hypes it to attract buyers, and sells at the peak. The price then collapses and late buyers lose.

How do I spot a pump and dump? Look for sudden volume without news, many accounts posting the same ticker, countdown “signals,” and wallets that bought shortly before the promotion started.

Is a pump and dump the same as a rug pull? No. A rug pull is the team exiting and killing the project. A pump and dump is price manipulation by any group, and the coin often keeps trading afterwards.

Are crypto pump and dump groups worth joining? No. The admins buy before they announce the coin, so members provide the buying demand the admins sell into. Most members lose money.

Are pump and dumps illegal in crypto? They are illegal in regulated securities markets, and several countries have charged crypto promoters as well. Rules vary by jurisdiction, and enforcement is slow.
