Which Is Safer After the Hack?

By WebDeskOctober 30, 20266 Mins Read

Coinbase vs Binance used to be a simple trade-off. Binance offered more coins, lower fees and deeper liquidity, while Coinbase offered regulation and peace of mind. Then, on October 29, 2026, Binance suffered the biggest hack in crypto history.

Quick verdict: Coinbase wins on safety, regulation and fiat on-ramps, which makes it the better choice for beginners and long-term holders. Binance still wins on fees, liquidity, coin selection and rewards, but only for active traders outside the EU who accept more risk. After the hack, we’d keep most long-term funds off both, in self-custody.

For the deep dives, read our Coinbase review and our Binance review.

Biggest security event Customer data theft (2025) $6.3B hot wallet hack (2026)

The $6.3 Billion Hack Changed This Comparison

Until this week, Binance had a strong security record. No hack had touched user funds since 2019. That changed on October 29.

Attackers compromised a DevOps engineer’s laptop and reached a Binance system that could submit withdrawals. Within minutes, about $6.3 billion left Binance hot wallets across several blockchains. Roughly $3 billion has been frozen, and Binance says it will cover every loss from its SAFU fund and company funds. Our Binance hack post mortem has the full timeline.

So far, Binance is handling it well. It has reserved over $6.34 billion, and $5 billion of that already sits in the exact tokens that were stolen. Still, withdrawals were paused, and that alone pushes many users to look elsewhere.

That’s why “Coinbase vs Binance” is suddenly a safety question, not just a fee question.

Security: Coinbase Wins

Coinbase has never suffered a hot wallet drain anywhere near the size of Binance’s hack. Its biggest security problems have involved customer data instead of funds.

In 2025, criminals bribed overseas support staff to steal customer data, which Coinbase then used to fight social engineering scams. This month, a third-party analytics leak also exposed user emails, as we covered in our Coinbase data breach post. Neither incident drained exchange wallets, but both show that no platform is airtight.

Binance still has real strengths. Its SAFU fund, proof of reserves and fast response all matter, and users look set to come out whole. However, a $6.3 billion breach is impossible to ignore.

In short, Coinbase wins on security today. Binance wins on recovery muscle.

Regulation: Coinbase Wins by a Mile

Coinbase is a US public company that publishes audited financials every quarter. It also holds a MiCA license, so it can legally serve users across the EU.

Binance, meanwhile, lost legal access to the EU on July 1, 2026, after withdrawing its MiCA application in Greece. Its regulatory history is also heavy, including a $4.3 billion US settlement in 2023.

For anyone in Europe, the answer is simple. Binance currently isn’t a legal option, while Coinbase is.

Fees: Binance Wins

On fees, Binance is far cheaper.

Binance charges 0.10% on spot trades, cut by 25% if you pay in BNB. Its USDC-margined futures cost 0.00% maker and 0.04% taker, which is among the cheapest pricing on any centralized exchange.

Coinbase Advanced, by contrast, charges 0.40% maker and 0.60% taker at base. On top of that, the simple Coinbase app adds a spread of around 1% for casual buyers. Coinbase One lowers some of those costs, but Binance still wins clearly.

Coins and Products: Binance Wins

Binance lists more than 600 coins across 1,500+ pairs. Coinbase lists roughly 350 to 400, and it curates them more carefully.

For derivatives, Binance offers up to 125x leverage on hundreds of contracts. Coinbase has caught up somewhat, with regulated futures across Europe and its Deribit acquisition, but its range is still smaller.

Coinbase has its own strengths, though. It offers commission-free US stock trading, USDC yield and direct access to the Base ecosystem.

Rewards and Airdrops: Binance Wins

This category isn’t close. Binance runs Launchpool, Megadrop and HODLer Airdrops, which have been among the most valuable free-crypto programs in the industry. We track them on our Binance project page.

Coinbase offers no launchpool or holder airdrops, only occasional small learn-to-earn rewards. For airdrop farmers, that’s a big gap.

Keep in mind that Binance’s reward programs exclude a growing list of regions, including the EU.

Who Should Use Which?

Choose Coinbase if you:

  • Are new to crypto and want the simplest, safest start
  • Live in the US or EU and want a fully licensed exchange
  • Mainly buy and hold major coins

Choose Binance if you:

  • Trade actively and care about low fees
  • Want the widest coin selection and high leverage
  • Farm Launchpool and HODLer rewards, and live in a supported region

Whichever you pick, don’t keep everything on one platform. The Binance hack proves no exchange is 100% secure. If you want more options, our Binance alternatives list covers the platforms we trust.

Keep This Content Free

We compare exchanges side by side so you don’t have to learn the hard way, and we keep it all free. Coinbase doesn’t run a referral program with us. If you decide Binance fits your trading once withdrawals reopen, signing up through our Binance referral link supports our work at no extra cost to you.

Coinbase vs Binance: Final Words

So, Coinbase vs Binance, who takes it?

For safety, regulation and ease of use, Coinbase wins clearly. It’s the right first exchange and a solid home for spot holders, especially after this week.

For fees, liquidity, coin selection and rewards, Binance still wins. Active traders outside the EU will keep using it, and Binance’s quick response to the hack suggests users will come out whole.

Either way, spread your funds and keep long-term holdings in self-custody. For more head-to-heads, check our full exchange review hub. Our last exchange comparison was Bitget vs Blofin.
