What Is Slippage in Crypto? Tolerance Settings Explained (2026)

Slippage in crypto is the difference between the price you expect when you place a trade and the price you actually get. It happens because prices move, or because your own order moves them, before the trade completes. On meme coins, slippage can cost several percent per trade.

Every trader pays it, yet few beginners understand it. This guide explains the causes, the settings and the ways to keep the cost down. For related terms, keep our meme coin glossary open in another tab.

Why Slippage Happens

Three things cause slippage, and they often combine.

Volatility. The price changes between your click and the confirmation. Fast markets therefore slip more.

Low liquidity. In a small pool, every trade moves the price. Thin meme coin pools are the classic example.

Order size. A large order eats through the available liquidity. Consequently, your average price gets worse as you buy.

Launchpad coins add one more factor. Their price follows a bonding curve, so every buy raises the price by design.

Slippage vs Price Impact

These two terms sit next to each other in most swap screens. However, they are not the same thing.

Price impact is the move your own trade causes. The app can calculate it in advance, so you see it before you sign.

Slippage, on the other hand, is the unexpected part. It covers whatever changes between the quote and the execution.

Here is a simple example. You swap $1,000 into a small pool, and the quote shows 3% price impact. Meanwhile, another buyer gets in ahead of you. As a result, you receive 1% fewer tokens than quoted. That extra 1% is slippage.

What Slippage Tolerance Means

Slippage tolerance is a setting. It tells the app the worst price you will accept. If the market moves beyond that limit, the trade fails instead of filling badly.

Set it too low, and trades keep failing. On some chains, you still pay gas for each failed attempt. Set it too high, and you accept terrible fills.

As a rough guide, these ranges are common:

  • 0.1% to 0.5% for large coins and stablecoins
  • 1% to 3% for mid-sized tokens
  • 5% or more for brand-new meme coins in fast markets

Tokens with a built-in tax are a special case. Your tolerance must sit above the tax, or the trade will fail.

Slippage and Sandwich Bots

High tolerance also attracts bots. A sandwich bot spots your pending trade and buys right before it. Then it sells right after you. Because your tolerance allowed a bad price, the bot keeps the difference.

Three habits reduce that risk. First, use the lowest tolerance that still fills. Second, turn on MEV protection if your wallet or app offers it. Third, split big trades into smaller ones.

One more warning belongs here. If a token only sells at 30% or 50% slippage, something is wrong. Usually a hidden tax is the reason, and that is a classic sign from our guide on what a honeypot in crypto is.

How to Reduce Slippage

You cannot remove slippage on a DEX, but you can shrink it:

  • Compare your order size with the pool size before you trade.
  • Break large orders into several smaller ones.
  • Use limit orders where the platform supports them.
  • Avoid the first minutes of a launch and big news moments.
  • Trade on venues with deep liquidity and good routing.

On centralized exchanges, a limit order removes slippage completely. Market orders there can still slip on thin order books.

Your choice of app matters as well. We compare the options in best places to trade meme coins. For trading on your phone, my FOMO app review shows the setup I use.

Final Words

Slippage in crypto is the gap between the price you see and the price you get. Volatility, thin liquidity and large orders all widen it. Therefore, the fix is mostly discipline. Size your trades to the pool, keep tolerance tight and use limit orders when you can. Also, treat extreme slippage requirements as a warning sign. A few percent saved on every trade adds up quickly over a year.

FAQ

What is slippage in crypto? Slippage is the difference between the expected price of a trade and the price at which it executes. It comes from price moves and limited liquidity between the quote and the confirmation.

What is a good slippage tolerance? For large coins, 0.1% to 0.5% usually works. Mid-sized tokens often need 1% to 3%, while new meme coins in fast markets can require 5% or more.

Why did my swap fail because of slippage? The price moved beyond your tolerance before the trade confirmed, so the app cancelled it. Raise the tolerance slightly or reduce your order size and try again.

Is slippage the same as a trading fee? No. Fees go to the exchange, the pool or the network. Slippage is a worse price caused by market movement or low liquidity, and nobody charges it on purpose.

Can slippage be positive? Yes. If the price moves in your favor before execution, you receive more than quoted. That is called positive slippage, although it happens less often.
