What Is a Honeypot in Crypto? How to Spot One (2026)

A honeypot in crypto is a token that lets you buy but blocks you from selling. The contract contains hidden rules that trap your money, so only the creator can cash out. The chart looks perfect because nobody else is able to sell.

Honeypots are among the oldest tricks in meme coins, and they still catch beginners daily. Fortunately, you can detect most of them in under a minute. The term also sits in our meme coin glossary, next to the other scam words.

How a Honeypot Works

Every token runs on a smart contract. Normally, that contract treats buyers and sellers the same. A honeypot contract, however, adds a hidden condition to the sell function.

The scam then runs in three steps. First, the creator launches the token and adds liquidity. Next, buyers arrive, and each purchase pushes the price up. Since no one can sell, the chart prints only green candles. Naturally, that perfect chart attracts even more buyers.

Finally, the creator removes the liquidity or sells their own tokens. Their wallet is the only one with permission. Everyone else keeps a token with a price tag and no exit.

The Common Types

Sell block. The contract simply rejects every sale that does not come from an approved wallet.

Blacklist. Buyers land on a blacklist right after their purchase. Blacklisted wallets can hold the token but cannot move it.

100% sell tax. Selling technically works. Yet the contract takes the whole amount as a “fee.”

Changeable tax. The tax starts low to pass early tests. Later, the owner raises it to 99%.

Trading pause. The owner holds a switch that freezes all trading. They flip it once enough money sits in the pool.

Squid Game token remains the textbook case from 2021. Holders watched the price climb for days while their sell buttons failed. Then the creators walked away with millions.

How to Spot a Honeypot

Most honeypots fail a few simple checks:

  • Read the trade history. If many wallets buy and almost none sell, something blocks the exit.
  • Run the contract address through a honeypot checker. These tools simulate a buy and a sell for you.
  • Look at the buy and sell tax in your trading app. Anything above 10% needs a very good reason.
  • Check who owns the contract. If an owner can still change taxes or blacklists, the rules can flip later.
  • Do a tiny test trade. Buy a few dollars and sell right away.

One warning applies here. A changeable tax can pass every test today and trap you tomorrow. Therefore, keep positions small on brand-new coins. All of these steps are part of my memecoin due diligence routine.

Honeypots also hide behind trendy labels. For example, a fake community takeover can relaunch a dead coin as a trap. Our guide on what a CTO is in crypto covers that angle.

Honeypot vs Rug Pull

People mix these two up, and they do overlap. In a classic rug pull, you can sell until the insiders drain the pool. In a honeypot, by contrast, you could never sell at all. The exit was closed from your first second in the trade.

So a honeypot is really one type of rug, built into the code. Our crypto rug pull guide explains the other types.

What to Do if You Are Stuck

Sadly, recovery is rare. Still, three steps limit the damage.

First, stop buying. Adding money to “average down” only feeds the trap.

Second, cancel the permissions you gave that token. Our guide on how to revoke token approvals shows the process.

Third, ignore anyone who offers to unlock your tokens for a fee. That offer is simply a second scam aimed at the same victims.

Keep This Content Free

Scam warnings work best when everyone can read them. If this one saved you a bad buy, you can back the site through our OKX or Bybit links. It costs you nothing extra, and it pays for more guides like this.

Final Words

A honeypot in crypto is a trap written into the token itself. You can enter, but the code will not let you leave. Because of that, the chart always looks better than it should. Luckily, the defense is cheap. Check the sells, run a checker, read the tax and make a small test trade. Those sixty seconds beat every recovery plan that exists.

FAQ

What is a honeypot in crypto? A honeypot is a token whose smart contract lets people buy but prevents them from selling. Only the creator can exit, usually by draining the liquidity.

How do I check if a token is a honeypot? Paste the contract address into a honeypot checker, review the trade history for real sells, read the sell tax, and try a small test sale before buying more.

Can I get my money back from a honeypot? Almost never. The contract blocks your sale, and blockchain transactions are final. Avoid anyone selling an “unlock” service, because that is another scam.

Is a honeypot the same as a rug pull? A honeypot is one type of rug pull. In a normal rug you can sell until the liquidity disappears, while in a honeypot selling never worked.

Why does a honeypot chart only go up? Because buyers can enter but nobody can sell. With no sell orders, every trade pushes the price higher until the creator exits.
