Farmers Who Lost on Purpose Are Up Millions

PAPER Hyperliquid trading went live on October 18. Paragon, a HIP-3 market deployer, listed PAPER-USDC as a pre-launch perp with up to 3x leverage. For the first time, the token that PaperTrade mints to losing traders has a price. That price opened near $0.012, spiked above $0.035 within two hours, and now sits around $0.024.

Nine days ago I broke down the lose-to-earn model in what is PaperTrade. Back then, PAPER had zero supply and no market. Today it has 8.5 billion tokens, a $13.8 million daily perp volume, and some of the wildest farming math I have seen all cycle. Let’s go through it.

What Actually Got Listed

First, a clarification. PAPER itself is still not transferable. You can only stake or unstake it inside PaperTrade. The Hyperliquid market is a synthetic perp that tracks what traders think PAPER is worth, not the token itself.

Paragon paid about $45,000 to win the PAPER ticker auction, then deployed the market under HIP-3 rules. Leverage caps at 3x. Hyperliquid flags it with a low-liquidity warning, and that warning is fair. The order book is thin, the spread sits around 0.2%, and open interest is under $5 million.

Once PAPER transfers unlock, the contract converts into a standard perp. Until then, it works like the Pump.fun perps I wrote about last week: a price feed on top of Hyperliquid’s engine, built by someone other than Hyperliquid.

Hyperliquid listed PAPER on perps

The Numbers Behind the Launch

PaperTrade’s predeposit phase pulled in $138 million from 11,465 addresses. Since trading opened on October 10, the protocol has minted roughly 8.55 billion PAPER. Almost all of it, 8.48 billion, is staked.

Those stakers have already claimed more than $52 million in USDC. Every dollar came from trader losses, because that is the only revenue PaperTrade has. In the first hour of the Hyperliquid listing, PAPER briefly traded at $0.035, putting the fully staked supply near $300 million.

For comparison, the first-week revenue of PaperTrade beat Pump.fun and Hyperliquid combined. A casino with no house money managed that in seven days.

The $979K Loss That Became a $5M Position

Here is the example everyone is passing around. On launch day, one wallet pushed $10.1 billion in volume through PaperTrade and lost $979,000 doing it. On purpose. The loss minted 252 million PAPER, which the wallet staked immediately.

Since then, the stake has paid out about $1.87 million in USDC, averaging $220,000 a day. Meanwhile, at the $0.0123 pre-market price, 252 million PAPER was worth $3.1 million. Add it up and you get roughly $5 million in value against a $979,000 loss, or a net gain near $4 million.

At today’s $0.024, that same bag is closer to $6 million before counting the USDC. The staking rewards alone covered the loss within three days. Lose a million, earn five. It might be the best Ponzi ever built.

Admittedly, this wallet is the extreme case. However, I keep seeing smaller versions of it. Farmers who lost $20,000 are sitting on PAPER worth six figures plus a USDC drip. The pattern holds across sizes, because the mint rate was flat at 100 PAPER per dollar lost while the pool sat under $2 million.

Why Hedging Changes Everything

Until this weekend, farming PaperTrade meant taking a real loss and praying the rewards would cover it. Now the trade is cleaner. Farm the loss, receive PAPER, stake it for USDC, and short PAPER-USDC on Hyperliquid to lock in the token value.

That is classic delta neutral farming, the kind I cover in our delta neutral farming guide. The catch is the 3x cap and the thin book. Shorting a few hundred thousand dollars of PAPER against a staked bag moves the market. Funding also flips around, so the hedge is not free.

Still, the asymmetry has shifted. A farmer who hedges sends very little to the pool, because the hedge offsets the loss. Meanwhile, the staked PAPER keeps paying. The protocol docs say this cut keeps growing as farmers stay to trade. We will see whether the pool can afford that.

My Own Attempt (It Did Not Go Well)

I pre-deposited $5,000 to farm the launch. Honestly, it was too little. Every time I placed a trade, I landed in the settlement queue with about 4,000 people ahead of me. So I added another $5,000 to the account.

That barely moved the needle. The queue dropped to roughly 3,000 wallets, and I gave up. PaperTrade on launch day was a whale game, and I was not a whale.

Maybe I should have gone back a few days later. Life got busy, and last week had plenty of trades elsewhere. Now I may regret that. I still have no open PaperTrade position, and I have not farmed a single PAPER. I tried, unsuccessfully.

Our Papertrade airdrop listing has the step-by-step for anyone who wants to try it today. Just know the easy phase is over. The mint rate decays as the pool grows, and the pool is far past $2 million.

Keep This Content Free

PaperTrade still has no referral program, so nothing in this post pays us. The perp market runs on Hyperliquid, and you can trade it through our Hyperliquid link. For a centralized home base, OKX and Bybit are the two we trust most.

Final Words

PAPER on Hyperliquid turns a strange experiment into a tradable one. Farmers finally have a price, a hedge, and a scoreboard. The early losers look like geniuses right now, with six-figure and seven-figure stakes paying out daily.

Whether that lasts depends on new losses arriving. Stakers only get paid when traders lose, and a hedged farmer barely loses at all. If everyone hedges, the pool stops growing. Watch the staking rewards per day, not the token price. That number tells you whether the casino still has customers. And if you want to compare this to drops that actually paid, our ranking of the biggest DEX airdrops ever sets the bar.

FAQ

Is PAPER trading on Hyperliquid?
Yes. Paragon listed PAPER-USDC as a HIP-3 pre-launch perp on October 18, 2026, with up to 3x leverage. The token itself is still non-transferable, so the perp tracks expected value rather than spot.

What is the PAPER price?
PAPER opened near $0.012, spiked above $0.035 within two hours, and now trades around $0.024. Liquidity is thin, so expect big swings.

How do you earn PAPER?
Close a losing trade or get liquidated on PaperTrade. The protocol mints PAPER to your wallet automatically. The rate started at 100 PAPER per $1 lost and decays as the liquidity pool grows.

Can you hedge PAPER farming now?
Yes. Farmers can short PAPER-USDC on Hyperliquid against their staked bag. The 3x cap, thin order book, and funding costs make large hedges expensive.

How much have PAPER stakers earned?
More than $52 million in USDC, all funded by trader losses. About 8.48 billion of the 8.55 billion supply is staked.

Is PaperTrade a Ponzi?
It pays earlier participants from the losses of later ones, which is the shape of one. The difference is that everything is onchain and disclosed. Treat it as a casino where losers own the house.
