The September CPI report landed hot this morning. Headline inflation rose 3.7% year over year, above the 3.6% forecast. Core CPI hit 2.6% against 2.5% expected. Bitcoin dropped more than $1K within minutes, yet I am still in my long.
What the September CPI Report Showed
Here are the numbers that hit at 8:30 AM ET:
- Headline CPI: +0.6% on the month, in line with forecasts, after +0.4% in August
- Headline CPI: 3.7% year over year, versus 3.6% expected and 3.4% in August
- Core CPI: +0.3% on the month, versus 0.2% expected
- Core CPI: 2.6% year over year, versus 2.5% expected and 2.4% in August
Higher energy costs drove a big share of the monthly jump. Core matters more, though, because the Fed watches it closely. In my CPI week preview, I expected a hot headline and a cooler core. Instead, core ran hot too.
Why CPI Days Move Bitcoin So Fast
Inflation drives Fed rate decisions. The Fed raised rates to 3.75% to 4.00% on September 16. That was a hike, not a cut. So every inflation print now feeds the question of another hike.
Higher inflation raises hike odds. Higher hike odds lift Treasury yields and the dollar. Bitcoin usually feels pressure from both.
Many traders also position before 8:30 AM ET. Liquidity is thin at that moment, so leveraged positions get wiped out fast. As a result, the first candle often shows noise instead of the real trend.
How Bitcoin and ETH Reacted
BTC sat near $83.8K before the release. Within minutes, it fell to about $82.8K. ETH slipped too, although by less.
Meanwhile, the 10-year Treasury yield jumped about 6.5 basis points to roughly 5.28%. That move explains much of the dip.
On the chart, $84K remains resistance after the recent rejection. $80K remains the first major support, as I covered in my Bitcoin 81K dip post.
What It Means for the Fed in October
Before the report, FedWatch showed about a 22% chance of a second straight hike. The Fed meets on October 27 and 28. A hot core print pushes that number up, so check the live FedWatch reading before you trade.
Several banks expected a hold in October and a hike in December. Barclays and Goldman Sachs both leaned that way. Therefore, the real question is whether this print pulls the next hike forward.
My Trades After the Print
I opened my BTC long on Monday. TP1 already hit, and my stop sits at entry. The wick on the numbers did not stop me out, so the trade is still alive. My NEAR long and my CATE long are still open too.
I am holding all three and watching how price develops. On CPI days, price often ends near where the day started. The numbers create volatility, yet the move frequently fades.
Because my BTC stop sits at entry, the worst case there is a break-even exit. That is why I don’t panic on the first candle. If structure breaks, I will adjust.

Final Words
The September CPI beat forecasts on both headline and core. Bitcoin dipped more than $1K, but structure has not broken yet. I stay in my longs, with my BTC stop at entry.
Thursday brings PPI at 8:30 AM ET, so more volatility is possible. Until then, I let price show its hand.
FAQ
What was the September 2026 CPI number?
Headline CPI rose 3.7% year over year, above the 3.6% forecast. Core CPI rose 2.6%, versus 2.5% expected.
Why did Bitcoin fall after the CPI report?
Hotter inflation raises the odds of another Fed hike. Consequently, Treasury yields and the dollar rose, which pressured Bitcoin.
Will the Fed hike rates in October?
Before the report, FedWatch priced about a 22% chance. The Fed meets October 27 and 28, and hot data can raise those odds.
Is CPI day a good day to trade Bitcoin?
It is a volatile day. The first move often fades, so waiting for the dust to settle is safer.
What comes after CPI this week?
PPI follows on Thursday at 8:30 AM ET. Expect more volatility around that release.
