$135M Unclaimed in Bridges and How to Check Your Wallet

Stuck crypto funds are bridge withdrawals that were started but never finished. Many bridges need a second transaction on the destination chain before the money lands in your wallet. If you skipped that step, your crypto is still sitting in the bridge contract. It is not lost. It is waiting for you to claim it.

Right now that pile is worth roughly $135 million. It sits across more than 80 bridges and over 500,000 wallets. A new checker at stuckfunds.eth.limo went viral this weekend by pointing it out. This post explains why it happens, how to check your own wallets, and how to do it without getting robbed.

Why Bridge Withdrawals Get Stuck

Most people think of a bridge as one click. Send on chain A, receive on chain B. That is how third-party bridges like Across, Stargate or Hop work. A relayer finishes the job for you.

Native bridges are different. They often split a withdrawal into two steps.

Take Arbitrum. You start a withdrawal to Ethereum, then wait out a seven-day challenge period. After that you have to come back and execute the claim on mainnet. Optimism and Base use the same model with a prove step and a finalize step. Polygon PoS needs an exit transaction after the checkpoint. zkSync Era needs a finalize call. Wormhole transfers need a redeem on the destination chain. Even Circle’s CCTP needs a receive transaction if no relayer picks it up.

The bridge never reminds you. Nothing pings your wallet a week later. You closed the tab, moved on, and the money stayed put.

Gas plays a role too. Many people start a withdrawal during a busy week, see a $40 mainnet claim fee, and decide to wait. Then they forget.

How Big Is the Stuck Crypto Funds Problem?

This is not a new discovery. It just never got fixed.

In late 2022, wallet company ZenGo found $27 million sitting unclaimed in the Polygon bridge. More than 35,000 transfers had been sent back toward Ethereum without a matching claim. Polygon paid the claim fee for one user who had left $2 million there since May of that year.

In April 2024, Arkham Intelligence published a list of whales with forgotten bridge balances. A wallet that received 50 ETH from Vitalik Buterin had over $1 million parked in the Optimism bridge for seven months. Coinbase had $75,000 in USDC waiting in the same bridge. A wallet linked to Bofur Capital had $1.8 million in wrapped Bitcoin stuck in the Arbitrum bridge for more than two years.

The stuckfunds checker takes that idea across dozens of bridges at once. On its first day it processed over 130,000 wallet checks, and more than 9,000 of them found something. The average wallet holds small amounts. Some hold five or six figures.

How to Check for Stuck Crypto Funds

Start with the official bridge interfaces. They already know about your pending withdrawals, and they are the only place you should ever claim.

Arbitrum

Open the official Arbitrum bridge and connect the wallet you used. Go to the transaction history tab. Any withdrawal with a “claim” button is money waiting for you. Claiming costs mainnet gas and nothing else.

Optimism and Base

The Superchain bridge and the Base bridge both show a withdrawals section. A withdrawal can sit in “ready to prove” or “ready to finalize” for years. Each step is a normal transaction from your own wallet.

Polygon PoS

The Polygon portal has a transaction history with pending exits. Anything past the checkpoint shows a claim option.

zkSync, Wormhole and CCTP

zkSync Era’s portal lists withdrawals awaiting finalization. Wormhole’s portal has a “recover” option where you paste the source transaction hash. For CCTP, Circle’s bridge interface lets you resume an unfinished transfer with the burn transaction hash.

The stuckfunds checker

If you have dozens of wallets, clicking through every bridge is slow. The stuckfunds checker is an option for a first pass. You paste an address and it scans for unfinished withdrawals across EVM chains, Solana, Sui, Aptos and NEAR. It says the tool is read-only, needs no wallet connection, and charges nothing. Tips are optional.

I am not endorsing it. The project is days old and nobody has audited it. Treat it as a hint, not a source of truth. If it flags something, go to the official bridge and verify there. Never claim through a link the checker or anyone else sends you.

Stay Safe While Claiming

Stuck money attracts scammers faster than anything in crypto. The playbook is always the same. A fake “recovery” site or a DM offers to unlock your funds. It asks you to connect a wallet, sign a message, or approve a token. Then it drains you.

Four rules cover almost every case.

Never connect your wallet to a checker. A legitimate scan only needs a public address. Reading balances requires no signature.

Never sign a message you do not understand. A real bridge claim is a plain transaction that calls the bridge contract. It is not a “verify ownership” signature and not a token approval.

Type bridge URLs yourself. Do not follow links from tweets, replies or DMs, even from accounts that look official.

Claim only to your own address. Real bridge claims can only pay out to the wallet that started the withdrawal. Anyone promising to send funds elsewhere is lying.

My Wallet Check Routine

I farm airdrops, so I burn through wallets. Over a year I probably use more than a hundred of them. Every few months I sit down and run a round of checks on all of them. I look for dust, forgotten testnet rewards, unclaimed airdrops, and now stuck bridge withdrawals.

It sounds boring. It also pays. Most rounds turn up a few dollars here and there. Some rounds turn up a wallet with a few hundred dollars I had written off. Once you run a hundred wallets, the odds of a nice surprise go up fast.

I wrote up the full routine in my guide on cleaning out old wallets to find coins. Stuck bridge funds are just one more line on that checklist now. If you are actively farming, you can also browse the latest airdrops to keep new wallets busy while you clean the old ones.

Keep This Content Free

Finding forgotten money is nice. Keeping AirdropAlert free costs money. If this post helped you recover something, or you just want to support the site, sign up for an exchange through one of our links. It costs you nothing and gives you the same fees and bonuses.

Final Words

Stuck crypto funds are real, and the pile is huge. Around $135 million sits in bridge contracts because someone skipped a second click. The good news is that none of it is lost. The bridge still holds it, and only the original wallet can claim it.

Check your old wallets through the official bridge interfaces first. Use third-party checkers as a shortcut if you want, but never connect a wallet or sign anything to “unlock” funds. Then make it a habit. A wallet check every few months costs you an hour and occasionally pays for the whole year.

FAQ

What are stuck crypto funds?
They are bridge withdrawals that were started on one chain but never claimed on the destination chain. The funds sit in the bridge contract until the owner finishes the second step.

Is money stuck in a bridge lost forever?
No. Native bridge withdrawals do not expire. You can claim them months or years later, as long as you still control the original wallet.

Which bridges need a manual claim?
Arbitrum, Optimism, Base, Polygon PoS, zkSync Era, Wormhole and CCTP all have flows where the user must send a second transaction. Most third-party bridges like Across or Stargate finish automatically.

Is stuckfunds.eth.limo safe to use
It says it is read-only and needs no wallet connection. That design is low-risk, but the project is new and unaudited. Use it as a hint only, and always verify and claim through the official bridge.

How much does it cost to claim stuck funds?
Only the gas for the claim transaction, usually on Ethereum mainnet. Nobody legitimate takes a cut. If someone asks for a fee up front, walk away.

Can someone else claim my stuck funds?
On some bridges anyone can pay the gas to trigger a claim, but the funds always go to the original owner’s address. Nobody can redirect them.
