How to Buy Zcash (ZEC) for the First Time: 2026 Guide

To buy Zcash for the first time, create an account on an exchange that still lists ZEC, such as Bybit, OKX, or Binance, verify your identity, deposit money, and place a buy order for ZEC. The tricky part is that first step. A wave of exchanges delisted Zcash in 2024 over its privacy features, and several only brought it back after the coin exploded in late 2025. Where ZEC trades now depends heavily on where you live, and this guide maps it all out.

Full disclosure before we start: I hold ZEC myself and have been DCAing into it through this entire run. So yes, I’m talking my own book, and no, that doesn’t change how the buttons work.

Why Everyone Suddenly Wants Zcash

Zcash launched in 2016 as the privacy answer to Bitcoin. Same 21 million supply cap, same proof-of-work mining, but with optional shielded transactions that hide the sender, receiver, and amount using zero-knowledge proofs. For most of a decade it bled value while exchanges showed it the door.

Then 2025 flipped the script. ZEC ran from double digits to four, entered the top 10, and flipped HYPE by market cap in September 2026. It trades around $1,470 today with a market cap near $25 billion. Roughly 30% of all ZEC now sits in shielded pools, the highest ratio ever, which means people actually use the privacy instead of just trading the ticker.

Wall Street joined the party too. Grayscale converted its old trust into a spot ETF on NYSE Arca in late August, and we broke down what the ETF filing means while it was still in motion. There’s even a memecoin that airdrops ZEC to its holders, which tells you how deep the narrative runs. New buyers are arriving daily, and most of them hit the same wall: their usual app doesn’t sell ZEC.

Which Exchanges Still List ZEC?

Here’s the part no other coin in our buying series needs. Privacy coins spent 2024 getting purged from major platforms, so let’s sort out who sells Zcash in 2026.

Still listed, and our picks: Bybit never dropped ZEC and runs active spot and perp markets today. OKX delisted it in January 2024, then relisted spot trading on November 24, 2025 once the rally made the decision easy. Binance kept ZEC throughout, slapped a monitoring tag on it in early 2024, and removed that tag in July 2025 after Zcash shipped exchange-friendly TEX addresses. MEXC and Bitget also carry it.

Listed in the US: Coinbase sells ZEC everywhere except New York, where Gemini picks up the slack. Kraken supports it as well. We don’t partner with those three, so no links, but they work fine for American beginners.

Off the table: South Korean exchanges dropped privacy coins back in 2021, Japan restricts them, and Dubai’s regulator banned them outright. If you live in one of those places, ZEC spot trading through a local licensed venue isn’t happening.

The takeaway: the delistings were real, but the doom stories are outdated. More top-ten venues list ZEC today than at any point since 2023.

How to Buy Zcash Step by Step

Once you know your venue, buying ZEC works like buying anything else. Fifteen minutes, start to finish.

1. Open your exchange account

Go with Bybit or OKX, the two we trust most for this cluster. Each review covers fees, regions, and features in depth. Skip straight to sign-up through our referral links for Bybit or OKX and the welcome bonuses attach to your account automatically.

2. Verify and deposit

Complete the KYC check, which takes minutes on both platforms. Fund the account by bank transfer for the cheapest route, or by card when speed beats fees.

3. Place your order

Open the ZEC/USDT spot market, enter your amount, and buy. A market order fills instantly at the current price. Nobody needs a whole coin either: at $1,470 per ZEC, a $50 buy gets you a perfectly respectable 0.034 ZEC.

Trading ZEC Beyond the Exchange

Decentralized platforms deserve a mention, with one caveat. Zcash runs its own proof-of-work chain, so ZEC doesn’t live natively on Ethereum or Solana where most DEX activity happens. Fresh beginners should buy spot on a CEX, full stop.

For traders who outgrow spot, Hyperliquid runs one of the deepest ZEC perp markets anywhere, and its open interest helped fuel this entire rally. The irony of trading ZEC on the platform it just flipped is free of charge. When leverage stops being a foreign language to you, our referral sets you up.

Withdrawing Your ZEC: Read This First

Zcash has a quirk that catches every newcomer: multiple address types. Transparent addresses work like Bitcoin’s, fully public. Shielded addresses hide everything. Unified addresses bundle both formats into one string.

Exchanges only deal in the transparent kind. Buy ZEC on Bybit and you receive regular, traceable coins, which surprises people who assumed the privacy came included. To actually shield your Zcash, withdraw to a wallet that supports shielded pools, such as Zashi, and move the funds into a shielded address yourself.

One warning worth bolding: never deposit to an exchange from a shielded address. Compliance systems can’t verify the source, and refunds take weeks when they happen at all. Unshield first, deposit second. Whether your coins should leave the exchange at all is a fair question with real trade-offs on both sides, and we weigh them in our self-custody versus exchange breakdown. For a privacy coin specifically, self-custody is kind of the point.

Where to Buy Zcash in Your Country

Geography matters twice as much for ZEC as for normal coins, since privacy rules stack on top of regular exchange licensing. Quick tour:

United States

American buyers have it easy for once. Licensed venues sell ZEC coast to coast, and the ETF added a brokerage route on top. Our USA exchange rankings sort the field.

Europe

MiCA licensing thinned the European herd, and privacy coins face extra AML heat, with tighter EU rules scheduled for 2027. Buy and self-custody sooner rather than later. The European exchange guide shows who holds a licence now.

Latin America

No regional privacy-coin crackdown here, so the standard picks apply, and local payment rails decide the rest. Find them in our LATAM exchange overview.

East Asia

This region is the hard mode for ZEC. Korea bans privacy coins entirely and Japan restricts them, so options shrink fast. Our East Asia exchange breakdown covers what remains, market by market.

India

Indian readers face the usual 30% tax plus TDS rather than any ZEC-specific rule. The India exchange guide lists the platforms that handle it best.

Keep This Content Free

Shielded transactions cost a fraction of a cent on Zcash, and reading AirdropAlert costs even less. If this guide saved you from buying ZEC on some sketchy fifth-tier venue, the sign-up links in step one are the tip jar: use them, claim your bonus, and the next guide funds itself.

Final Words

Zcash went from delisting casualty to top-ten asset in about a year, and buying it stopped being the puzzle it was in 2024. Pick a venue that lists it in your region, buy the spot coin, and shield what you plan to keep. My own approach hasn’t changed since the flippening post: boring DCA, no leverage, coins moved off-exchange.

New to all of this and ZEC feels like a strange first coin? Fair. Start with our guide on how to buy Ethereum or work through buying your first Bitcoin, then come back for the privacy chapter. The whole series follows the same fifteen-minute recipe.

FAQ

Which exchanges still list Zcash in 2026?

Bybit, OKX, Binance, MEXC, and Bitget all run ZEC spot markets globally, while Coinbase, Gemini, and Kraken cover the US. OKX relisted ZEC in November 2025 after delisting it in early 2024. We reviewed every one of the linked platforms in depth.

Why did exchanges delist ZEC in the first place?

Compliance teams struggled to verify deposits coming from shielded addresses under AML rules. Zcash answered with TEX addresses, a transparent-only format built for exchanges, which convinced Binance to drop its monitoring tag in July 2025.

Is the ZEC I buy on an exchange private?

No. Exchanges hold and send transparent ZEC, visible on-chain like Bitcoin. Privacy starts only after you withdraw to a shielded-capable wallet and move the coins into a shielded pool yourself.

Can I buy Zcash through a regular brokerage?

Yes, indirectly. Grayscale’s spot Zcash ETF trades on NYSE Arca, giving US investors ZEC price exposure inside a normal brokerage account. You get the price, not the coins or the privacy.

How much money do I need to start?

Any amount. ZEC divides into eight decimal places, so $20 buys a fraction of a coin just fine. Start small, learn the withdrawal flow, then size up.
