Is Saylor’s Strategy Selling Again? Lookonchain Claims Company Moved 299.84 BTC

Key Takeaways

  • Lookonchain reports a Strategy-linked wallet moved 299.84 BTC ($18.91M), akin to pattern seen before July’s $216M sale.
  • Strategy sold 3,588 BTC for about $216 million between July 1 and July 5, its first standalone net reduction since 2022.
  • Strategy has issued no official statement on the alleged transfer.

A Familiar Pattern Repeats

Lookonchain reported that a wallet linked to Strategy moved 299.84 BTC to a new address nine hours before the post, worth roughly $18.91 million at current prices, and asked directly whether Saylor’s Strategy is selling BTC again. Onchain Lens, a separate analytics platform, corroborated the transfer and noted that a similar onchain move was detected last month before Strategy disclosed a bitcoin sale worth about $216 million, adding that this latest transfer could also precede another disclosure. Strategy had issued no official statement addressing the transfer.

The comparison to July isn’t a stretch given that the last time a Strategy-linked wallet moved BTC was between July 1 and July 5, and during that week, the company sold 3,588 BTC for roughly $216 million.

What Happened in July

That July sale marked a turning point for Strategy, with Bitcoin.com News reporting that the company sold 3,588 BTC at an average price near $60,000, realizing a $203 million loss, in a move tied to funding distributions on its STRC perpetual preferred stock rather than a shift in long-term conviction.

The sale ended four years of Saylor’s public “never sell” pledge, a stance he had repeated at nearly every earnings call since Strategy began accumulating bitcoin. Strategy executives had already signaled the possibility during the company’s first-quarter earnings call, saying the firm might sell some holdings to fund STRC dividends, with the expectation that doing so would eventually let Strategy buy back more bitcoin than it sold.

The Q2 filings that followed showed just how sharply the numbers swung as Strategy went from a $14 billion profit to an $8.2 billion loss for the quarter as the bitcoin price pulled back from earlier highs, even as the company’s total holdings kept growing on a coin-count basis.

A Company Sending Mixed Signals

Strategy’s public messaging around bitcoin has grown harder to read at a glance. Just a day before this latest transfer, Saylor posted “Bitcoin Drive engaged” alongside the company’s acquisition tracker, a message that fueled expectations of another purchase, continuing a pattern of cryptic social posts that have preceded past treasury announcements.

Saylor also spent recent weeks knocking down a separate viral claim that Strategy had newly authorized up to $5 billion in bitcoin sales, telling reporters the authorization was old news tied to the company’s existing Digital Credit Capital Framework rather than a fresh decision.

Since the company is simultaneously the market’s largest corporate bitcoin buyer and, as of this year, an occasional seller, each new movement makes it harder to read on its own.

A Cash Cushion That Complicates the Sell Theory

Strategy added $525 million to its USD reserve, pushing coverage for preferred dividends and interest to 2.1 years, up from roughly 17.4 months earlier in the year. Under a board-approved policy, that reserve can only be used to pay preferred dividends and debt interest, and directors have set a 12-month minimum coverage floor, meaning Strategy now has a much larger buffer than it did heading into the July sale.

That cushion goes against the idea that the company urgently needs to sell more bitcoin to cover STRC’s 12% dividend rate, even as Cryptoquant has separately warned Strategy should pause bitcoin buys altogether and keep rebuilding cash while the preferred stock trades below its par value.

Strategy currently holds 843,775 BTC, bought for a combined $63.69 billion at an average price of $75,476 per coin, making it the largest corporate bitcoin treasury in the world by a wide margin. Whether the 299.84 BTC transfer turns into a disclosed sale or simply another wallet reshuffle will likely become clear within days, given how closely both onchain trackers and Strategy’s own SEC filings are being watched right now.
