NVIDIA Optimizes Omniverse NuRec Pipeline with Nsight Tools

NVIDIA has unveiled significant performance improvements to its Omniverse NuRec neural reconstruction pipeline, a key technology for creating high-fidelity simulations of real-world environments from multisensor data. Using its Nsight Developer Tools, NVIDIA achieved a nearly 50x speedup in core processing tasks, a breakthrough that enhances the usability of NuRec in autonomous vehicles (AVs), robotics, and AI training workflows.

NuRec, which integrates advanced neural rendering techniques like 3D Gaussian Splatting, transforms sensor data from cameras and lidar into photorealistic 3D environments. These environments are crucial for training and validating Physical AI systems, enabling engineers to replay dynamic scenes, validate model behavior, and generate synthetic training data. However, the computational demands of this fidelity have been a bottleneck—until now.

NVIDIA’s optimization process began with performance profiling using Nsight Systems, a tool that visualizes workload behavior across CPU, GPU, and other resources. Initial profiling revealed inefficiencies in GPU utilization, particularly in the interpolate function, which was bogged down by numerous small CUDA kernels. By fusing these operations into a single kernel, NVIDIA reduced processing time from 4.184 milliseconds to just 83.81 microseconds—a 50x improvement.

Further refinements addressed synchronization delays and workload imbalances, allowing the GPU to handle tasks more compactly. Nsight Compute, another profiling tool, was then used to analyze the performance of specific kernels like renderBackward, which processes both lidar and camera data. NVIDIA split the kernel into separate versions for each data type, fine-tuning resource allocations to improve GPU occupancy from 15% to as high as 50%. Run times for the most demanding kernels dropped from 31 milliseconds to 18 milliseconds.
