Explore how AI can drive sustainability amidst rising energy demands and climate challenges. Experts discuss AI’s potential, efficiency, and policy implications.

Artificial Intelligence (AI) is at the forefront of discussions on sustainable development, as experts weigh its benefits and challenges in tackling climate change. During a panel at NVIDIA GTC 2025, experts from Columbia University, Deloitte, and the Wilson Center debated whether AI is guiding us toward a more sustainable future or exacerbating global energy and climate challenges, according to NVIDIA’s blog.

AI’s Energy Implications

The rapid expansion of AI technologies raises concerns about their energy consumption, particularly in data centers. A report from the International Energy Agency highlights that data centers used approximately 1.5% of global electricity in 2024, with projections indicating a rise to 6% by 2035. Bernhard Lorentz from Deloitte noted that while AI’s energy demands are growing, they remain relatively small compared to sectors like manufacturing and transportation.

The panelists emphasized the importance of strategic planning in constructing data centers and selecting energy sources to avoid overloading local grids. David Sandalow from Columbia University pointed out that advancements in AI chips have significantly increased energy efficiency, reducing the energy needed for computations by a factor of 100,000.

Bridging AI and Climate Policy

A significant hurdle is the gap between AI capabilities and climate policy. Lauren Risi of the Wilson Center stressed the need for policymakers to understand AI’s potential and limitations to craft effective regulations. She likened the current situation to a “game of whack-a-mole,” where solving one issue often leads to new challenges.

Creating a shared understanding between AI and climate experts is crucial for leveraging AI in sustainability efforts. Collaboration between governments, businesses, and researchers is essential to ensure AI’s application aligns with environmental goals.

AI’s Role in Energy Optimization

The panel also explored AI’s capacity to enhance energy systems and accelerate clean technology innovations. AI tools are improving weather predictions, benefiting solar and wind energy sectors by optimizing energy production through better forecasts. Smart grid management, powered by AI, can increase the integration of renewable energy into power systems.

In material science, AI is revolutionizing the discovery and testing of new materials for energy storage and carbon capture. David Sandalow highlighted AI’s ability to simulate millions of interactions rapidly, potentially leading to breakthroughs in energy-efficient technologies.

The Path Forward

While AI holds promise for sustainability, its impact depends on proactive efforts from all stakeholders. As David Sandalow noted, AI’s potential to reduce greenhouse gas emissions hinges on effective mobilization. AI can optimize processes, reduce waste, and drive efficiency, but only if integrated with strong climate policies.

Risi emphasized the importance of acting on AI-driven insights, such as deforestation rates and carbon storage measurements. The panel concluded that while AI is a powerful tool, its success in addressing climate change requires concerted action across sectors.
